Mitigation Biologist


Ducks Unlimited Great Plains Region has an opening for a full-time Mitigation Biologist.  We are seeking a mid-level biologist to join our team, delivering DU’s growing wetland mitigation program in the Great Plains Region. The mitigation team is on the forefront of DU’s exciting new ecosystem services emphasis. The new biologist will have the ability to help develop and influence innovative projects and programs, including wetland mitigation and beyond (streams, water quality, etc.). 

DU has built successful wetland mitigation banking and in-lieu fee programs across many states. Although our mitigation team can deliver fee-for-service projects, we have a significantly different outlook and work environment than traditional consulting firms. We will give you the direction and guidance needed to succeed, but also the ability and independence for creativity in achieving results. You will have the ability to see projects through from beginning to end, taking great satisfaction in walking the quality habitat you developed through lengthy planning and implementation efforts. DU’s  Great Plains mitigation team operates throughout seven states in our Great Plains Region (ND, SD, NE, KS, CO, WY, MT). The current need is based out DU’s Great Plains Regional Office (GPRO) in Bismarck, ND. Working at our Bismarck regional headquarters will allow full immersion into the DU culture and developing the professional relationships to build a strong career with DU. Future relocation within the region is also a possibility, if desired.) 


The biologist position will need to perform a wide array of duties. The position will require infrequent overnight travel (estimated 10-20 days per year). An overview of potential duties is provided below:  


  • Identifying potential projects
  • Site investigations to determine suitability for restorations
  • Writing mitigation plans; wetland delineation
  • Performing annual monitoring/reports
  • Providing biological/technical assistance
  • Developing restoration plans (wetlands/streams/ water quality) in conjunction with DU’s civil engineering staff
  • Coordinate restoration and land protection activities
  • Management of existing mitigation sites
  • Developing/maintaining relationships with stakeholders
  • Consultant management; writing business plans and funding requests
  • Project management/planning/delivery tasks
  • Negotiating project agreements; securing funding agreements
  • GIS map production and analysis; credit sales and marketing/outreach tasks; research/literature review 
  • Participating in trainings and conferences
  • Construction management/oversight
  • Data entry/analysis in Excel or other software
  • Public presentations; coordinate with agricultural lessee(s) or tenants; develop grazing/management plans
  • Other duties as assigned 



Experience and Education: 2-10 years of relevant experience. Experience developing Mitigation Plans (Prospectus, Banking Instrument, etc.) and interaction with USACE/IRT reviews. Experience developing and reviewing documents, status reports, and deliverables; and completing quality control review of documents. Understanding, training, and experience with wetland ecosystems, plant identification, soils characterization, wildlife habitat conservation, stream restorations, and threatened/endangered species regulations. Experienced in field work to delineate wetlands according to the Corps of Engineers Wetlands Delineation Manual and Regional Supplement(s). Understanding of the applicable wetland related regulations and delineation protocols and/or associated permitting experience. Experience driving/navigating in remote locations and experience with off-road vehicle/ATV operation. Experience in drone operation and information processing. 

 Communication Skills: Excellent communication, ethics, attitude, and determination

Technological Proficiency: Strong technical skills, aptitude to analyze and interpret information, and attention to detail. Experience with GPS and mobile technologies. Highly proficient in the use of computer software (Microsoft Word, Excel). Professional experience working with GIS software, such as ESRI ArcGIS.

Analytical Skills: Ability to use creativity and analytical skills to develop solutions for project challenges

Depending on the successful applicant’s level of experience and expertise, the position could take on additional responsibilities such as leading various duties mentioned above and independently managing workload between multiple mitigation projects.
