Job Description
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
The Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing students with instruction that combines principles of learning, models of teaching and creates a high degree of clarity for students. The teacher is responsible for creating an educational atmosphere where students have the opportunity to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional professional and academic and cultural growth. The teacher is responsible for organizing and implementing an instructional program that will result in students achieving academic success in accordance with Dr. Richard Izquierdo Health & Science Charter School Mission and goals.
Primary Responsibilities
· Provide students with Academic Intervention Services (AIS) designed to help them meet the learning standards in English, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science
· Educate special education students in the least restrictive environment mandated as per his or her IEP
· Provide a Special Education Teacher Support Services (SETSS) Resource Room teacher providing a push in/pull out and small group instruction to students when called for in the IEP
· Mainstream students when he/she is showing strengths/gains in a particular subject area, revisit IEP, and convene with team members to make changes to IEP If available
· Use of students data in differentiating instruction so teachers may create multiple paths for students of different abilities and different needs to use and present the concept in the daily learning process
· Provide intervention based on the specific needs of the students as specified in his or her IEP and Student Success Plan.
· Assess changing student needs and implement plans of improvement
· Maintain effective and efficient data gathering procedures
· Provide a positive environment in which students are actively engaged in the learning process
· Communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues, and other professional
· Attend SpEd and IEP meetings
· Maintain consistent Co-teaching conversations (ongoing)

· Take responsibility for meeting school-wide student performance goals
· Demonstrate gains in the student performance
· Participate in training and presentations about various pedagogical competencies
· Meet professional obligations through efficient work habits such as: meeting deadlines, honoring schedules and collaborating effectively with colleagues
· Perform administrative duties and class coverage as assigned by a supervisor
· Provide a positive environment in which students are actively engaged in the learning process communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues, and other professors
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position and the hours and work and days are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm unless the school will host a school event which then all teachers are expected to stay.
Compensation
· Compensation based on experience
Travel
· Limited to no travel required on school trips
Required Education and Experience
· Bachelor’s degree is required
· Minimum of two years teaching experience in an urban public school or charter school setting preferred
· Must hold a Valid NYS Special Education certification
Preferred Education and Experience
· Master’s Degree preferred in related subject or field
Knowledge and skills
· Knowledge of differentiated teaching strategies
· Knowledge of data-driven instructional strategies
· Knowledge of backward planning
· Knowledge of co-teaching models
· Knowledge of the Charlotte Danielson Framework of Teaching
· Knowledge of the Responsive Classroom Approach to Discipline
· Knowledge of SPED data management and its components: Baseline, Anecdotal, Goals, and Growth
· Knowledge of Accommodations ( Level I -RTI protocols)
· Knowledge of IEP reporting and assessing goals
· Knowledge of Functional Behavior Assessment write-ups as needed
· Knowledge of Behavior Intervention Plans meetings and its applications
