Assist with client cases under the supervision of a licensed attorney. Facilitate and coordinate communications between attorney, client, and other community agencies. Staff Helpline and provide legal information, community referrals, in-house referrals for legal and advocacy, and safety-planning services.
Bachelor’s degree in social science, paralegal degree or certificate, or the equivalent of two years of experience in the legal field. Possess good interpersonal as well as written and oral communication skills. Willingness and ability to work with individuals dealing with the effects of physical, emotional, psychological, and sexual abuse. Highly organized, ability to multi-task.
Paralegal experience. Knowledge of feminist philosophy of violence against women. Knowledge of dynamics of family violence.
Under the supervision of a licensed attorney, apply knowledge of substantive and procedural laws and policies to prepare representation for domestic violence, restraining order, divorce, custody & visitation, paternity, and post-decree matters in a timely manner.
Work with staff attorney and Managing Attorney on caseload not to exceed 40 active cases.
Be familiar with community resources and their functions. Serve as a liaison between clients, attorneys, case managers, advocates, and other agencies/resources to assist clients with their legal and other needs.
Work under the supervision of a licensed attorney in scheduling and interviewing clients, drafting pleadings, performing research, investigation, and follow-up.
Exercise discretion and judgment in dealing with all client-related matters, to honor the privacy and confidentiality of clients; comply with the requirements of attorney-client confidentiality and attorney-client privilege.
Communicate clearly with the client, attorney and advocate on the case, if any, to assure effective assistance for clients.
Organize and maintain case files, ensuring that all documents are filed appropriately and in a timely manner, and that all internal case/client-related deadlines are in the master calendar.
Assist the attorney to ensure all court deadlines are met, documents are filed and submitted to court in a timely manner, and that all court deadlines are in the master calendar.
Be familiar and comply with legal team policies, procedures, and best practices including the Legal Team Operations Manual and Paralegal Manual.
Answer calls for information, community referrals, advocacy or crisis counseling assistance on Helpline. Evaluate seriousness of calls and handle calls in calm and professional manner.
Assist with the collection of data and information required of the agency including calls taken, community referrals made, contacts with other agencies, and other information relevant to responding to Helpline calls, case management and reports to funding sources.
Keep accurate time sheets and time charge codes and submit on a timely basis. Submit required leave requests on a timely basis.
Keep updated and current on issues by attending four relevant trainings and substantive issue trainings in the agency per year.
Participate in performance reviews after the introductory period of employment and annually thereafter as well as on an “as needed” basis.
Perform other duties, as requested by staff attorneys, Managing Attorney, and the Vice President of Survivor and Advocacy Services.
This position reports directly to the Managing Attorney.
