DC International School (DCI) is a public charter school serving nearly 1,600 students in grades 6-12 in Washington, DC. Founded in 2013, the school's mission is to foster inquiring, engaged, knowledgeable, and caring secondary students who are multilingual, culturally competent, and committed to proactively creating a socially just and sustainable world. The school seeks to do this by providing a rigorous IB (International Baccalaureate) and language immersion program to a community of students who represent the diversity of Washington, DC. The vision of the school is that providing this kind of opportunity to a broad group of students will prove the value of a rigorous, inquiry-based, internationally-minded language and cultural education in closing equity gaps based on race, socioeconomic status, and other factors and will cultivate world citizens who can effectively promote social justice and cross-cultural understanding. DCI has set out to do something that few, if any, schools have attempted before. The school community works tirelessly to achieve this ambitious and important mission, and DCI is on the path to establishing a groundbreaking model for other schools to follow, striving for educational equity and closing opportunity gaps for the students it serves.
DCI was created as a middle and high school option for students attending language immersion elementary charter schools throughout the District of Columbia. In addition to taking in students from these feeder schools, DCI also accepts students from other local schools through an open lottery process. Grades six through twelve are housed at the school's spacious, state-of-the-art campus located in the redevelopment complex on the Parks at Walter Reed. The school features the IB Middle Years Programme for students in grades 6-10. Very unique to DCI, all students participate in either the IB Career Program or Diploma program and take IB classes. DCI students pursue a rigorous senior and junior year; on average each DCI student takes over five IB college prep classes. DCI has a one-to-one technology model supporting the implementation of the program.
This year DCI will graduate its third class. DCI's graduates have continued on to impressive universities locally, nationally, and internationally. Each year over 90% of students have graduated and been accepted into Universities, and over half receive the biliteracy seal and their IB Diploma or Career Program certificate.
In 2021-22 the school has 1,523 students, 250 staff, and a budget of $35 million dollars. We are looking for an experienced Executive Director to lead the school for the next decade, to be the best in the city, ensuring all our students have equitable access to DCI's International Baccalaureate, world-class education that empowers students to build their chosen future. DCI is seeking a skilled visionary leader, an effective communicator, and an enthusiastic champion of the school's mission who is committed to equity and fostering a sense of belonging for all students to join the community as the next Executive Director. This school leader will be responsible for managing the school's senior academic leaders, operations director, interfacing with the board and broader DC education community, and ensuring that the school's vision and mission are living through its work with students every day. The leader will be a passionate advocate for DCI's work on behalf of its students and will maintain a thriving 6th-12th grade program that ensures a high level of academic rigor for all students, marrying that intent with a focus on both language development and cultural humility.
The candidate will believe deeply in DCI's core values of IB for All, internationalism through language and cultural fluency, and student agency. . The leader will be strong in external relations with connections in the local and national education community. This person will ideally have some experience with and/or exposure to the IB program and language immersion best practices, and speak one of DCI's global languages Spanish, French or Chinese. The leader will understand the needs of middle and high school students and be an enthusiastic builder of school culture and traditions and continue to foster DCI's extra-curricular programming focusing on student agency. And any qualified candidate will be able to demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion with meaningful examples of how they have led with these values in their previous work with teams, adults, and students.
The Executive Director's key responsibilities include:
Leading the vision for DCI's success, including ensuring that its delivery of the academic/IB curriculum, language and cultural programs, community engagement, and external partnerships are highly effective and tightly aligned to the school's mission and goals. Ensure the school meets identified charter goals and internal goals for student achievement and IB diploma attainment, recruitment, staff culture, and student culture.
Managing the senior leadership team and other senior staff by acting not only as a supervisor but also as a coach and consensus builder and by remaining deeply committed to developing and bringing out the strengths of all of DCI's people while holding them accountable for their goals and desired student outcomes. The Executive Director is responsible for the success of the school, leading the full team towards student success; operational success—including DCI's leadership in managing the pandemic; political leadership; and human resources management.
Ensuring the viable management of the school fiscally and operationally. Ensure that financial management, fundraising goals, facilities and operations, and human capital are effectively managed and overseen, following on the previous ED's success in these areas. Working with the COO, understands and supervises the business functions of the school, including budgeting; monitoring and reporting income, expenses, investments, and cash flow; ensures that funds are used to provide a top-performing academic program. Oversees all employment and human relations matters. Manages all school compliance with local, state, and federal guidelines.
Partnering with the Board of Directors and funders to secure and allocate the resources and supports necessary to maintain the health of the school, remaining solutions-oriented while pushing the boundaries of what is possible to realize the highest levels of success for DCI's youth and their community.
Inspiring students, faculty, staff, and other partners to be their best selves every day, always keeping the community's moral and ethical compass pointing in the right direction, and ensuring an unyielding focus at all times on what is best for DCI's students and their futures.
Represent DCI as a champion of the school among external partners. Represent and advocate for the DCI community within the DC and at a national level among stakeholders. Oversee school communications with DCI's communication team with a commitment to proactive engagement, and serve as the school's spokesperson.

Experienced in overseeing a complex organization, knowledgeable about best practices around school growth and programmatic expansion, and able to manage organizational change effectively;
A performance- and results-driven leader with a demonstrated track record of impact on student outcomes, with strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytic skills;
