Residential Treatment Therapist

Reports to: Clinical Supervisor

  1. Job Summary / Expectations:

The Therapist is responsible for providing direct therapeutic and casework services to residents at Detroit Behavioral Institute. The Therapist works as an integral member of the multi-disciplinary treatment team providing clinical insight, direction and support.

  1. Qualifications:

    1. Education: Master’s Degree in social work, counseling, psychology or a recognized related field from an accredited college or University.

    2. Specialized Knowledge, Licenses, etc.: Full or limited license as social worker, professional counselor, or clinical psychologist.

    3. Knowledge of and experience with children/adolescents with mental health needs. Sensitivity to service population cultural characteristics.

    4. Essential Functions and Responsibilities

      1. Facilitates group, family and individual therapy for all youth on their assigned caseload per DBI policy standards.

      2. Develops quality written individualized Treatment Plans (Initial, Updated and Release Plans), Court Reports and Discharge Summaries that accurately indicate the needs of the youth on their assigned caseload. Submits documentation according to established time frames.

      3. Maintains contact with youth’s CMO/DHS/Referral Source workers and their parent/guardians keeping them updated on the youth’s individual progress, including their treatment goals.

      4. Maintains case supervision until case closure including aftercare services as determined by the court.

      5. Inputs all required documentation (progress notes, reports, etc.) into the electronic record within required timeframes.

      6. Receives daily reports from Youth Specialists on all youth progress and challenges.

      7. Provides 24 hours/7 days on-call availability to respond to client/program crises.

      8. Reviews all assessment information, including psychological and psychiatric evaluations for assigned residents completing any follow-up activities and recommendations.

      9. Schedules and facilitates monthly case conferences, providing clinical input and insight.

      10. Develops and delivers clinical training to Detroit Capstone Academy staff upon request.

      11. Represents Detroit Capstone Academy through the development and presentation of information to various provider agencies, Court and County representatives.

      12. Requests and participates in multi-disciplinary staffing of cases with extraordinary circumstances or which are not progressing according to the treatment plan.

      13. Assists in developing and maintaining community resource information.

      14. Completes all documentation according to Federal guidelines, Licensing rules, COA standards and contract standards as outlines in the DBI-CA Policy and Procedure Manual.

      15. Works closely with the Administrative Support Staff to coordinate family visits, phone calls, intake, etc. for the residents.

      16. Completes reintegration paperwork, if appropriate.

      17. Coordinates care with any medical or mental health professional and/or community service agency personnel providing treatment to the client.

      18. Assures that all charts for his/her clients are complete and maintained in proper order.

      19. Attends all weekly clinical meetings.

      20. Continues with professional education and development and attains all CEU’s required by the licensing board of his/her respective discipline.

      21. Participates in regular supervision with Clinical Supervisor.

      22. Participates in staff meetings, trainings, and agency activities.

      23. Serves as an advocate for youth to ensure that program and contract requirements are met.

      24. Responsible to work some non-traditional hours (i.e. evenings, night time on call and weekends) as needed

      25. Provides coverage for seclusion/restraint authorizations as assigned and completes related debriefings as needed.

      26. Assesses youth for increased staffing (one to one, close observation, acute care) as needed according to DBI policy.

      27. Responsible to work with state licensing consultant in response to investigation questions, interviews and requests while on site.

      28. To maintain a professional and ethical code of behavior.

      29. Actively engages in the milieu during the shift, making self-available to youth and staff for clinical support and guidance as needed.

      30. Performs all other duties as assigned.
