Job Description


The Director of Convention Sales reports to the Executive Vice President of Sales & Services in the Convention Sales department. The Director’s primary responsibility is to develop, direct and execute all convention and meeting sales strategies and activities.

  • Support VISIT DENVER’s efforts related to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI).
  • Develop and maintain strong working relations within VISIT DENVER as well as the Colorado Convention Center (CCC) Sales Staff, partner with hotel Directors of Sales & Marketing and hotel Sales Staff.
  • Act as liaison between CCC and VISIT DENVER as it relates to ensuring a consistent flow of information of function space use is maintained efficiently and consistently. Approval of hall sheets and preparation of proposals in a timely manner. Consistent maintenance of calendar.
  • Collaborate and work directly with the Executive Vice President, Sales & Services as it relates to Strategic Planning, Industry Relations, sales plans, forecasts, goal setting and reporting.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with industry influencers and key strategic partners.
  • Maintains relationships by meeting with key clients, and assisting sales manager(s) in negotiating and executing contracts.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with Metro hotel General Managers, Directors and sales staff.
  • Assist in managing existing key select accounts to include but not limited to large repeat customers and regularly communicates with primary contacts.
  • As directed, assists and conducts Sales Meetings in the absence of the EVP Sales & Services and Associate Vice President Convention Sales (AVP).
  • Oversees and maintains third party partnerships as determined annually.
  • Leads the effort in planning client events and local events such as Denver Daycation and MEET Denver.
  • Works closely with AVP on hiring, training and management of team.
  • Other duties as may be assigned or requested.


  • Directly manage 10 sales managers as well as oversight of three sales coordinators.
  • Hire and orient all new employees. Create the job qualifications for the position, interview all qualified applicants referred by HR and select appropriate individual based upon the applicant’s ability to satisfy the position qualifications.
  • Instruct and train all employees on the specific responsibilities of their position. Establish on-the-job training activities on the procedures and techniques of the position to allow the employees to become proficient as quickly as possible.
  • Establish objectives, coach and counsel direct employees. Assign work to direct employees and develop time schedules that assure timely completion of work. Coordinate all departmental activities and communicate relevant work activities.
  • Review performance of all direct employees consistent with the company’s Performance Management Program.
  • Counsel and discipline all employees who have performance or disciplinary problems with guidance from HR.


A Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred.


Five (5) years of experience in Convention Bureau and/or Hotel Sales with a proven track record of accomplishment and a minimum of three (3) years’ experience in supervising a sales team.


  • Broad functional knowledge and experience in areas of convention sales, customer relationship building internally and externally.
  • Persuasive sales and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively.
  • Ability to read, comprehend and create effective business proposals, reports, presentations and correspondence.
  • Comfortable with public speaking, providing presentations, and delivering data at internal meetings, external facing meetings with community stakeholders, and at industry conferences.
  • Ability to create and outline procedures as well as execute processes with appropriate follow up and accountability.
  • Ability to identify, decipher, and communicate industry data internally and with community stakeholders including and not limited to STR data, FuturePace, and Tourism Economics.
  • Strong overall leadership skills including sales management, strategic planning, coaching and counseling.
  • Presentation of the following accountabilities: leadership, communication, mentoring, empowerment and resource management.
  • Maintain professional appearance.
  • Proficient technology application skills; Advanced MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Access), MS Outlook, Client Management Software and Internet Explorer skills.
  • Excellent command of the English language, oral and written.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, maturity, good judgment and capable of communicating in a professional manner with a diverse range of individuals.
  • Efficient and proven organizational skills; ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects/responsibilities simultaneously while meeting stringent deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven problem analysis and resolution at both a strategic and functional level; exceptional analytical skills.
  • Ability to take initiative with projects and provide leadership.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Reliable, dependable, flexible and responsive; must be available to work overtime or outside normal business hours as required.
  • Ability to travel locally and domestically.

  • $145,000 to $155,000
