The purpose of this Chief Deputy is to plan, direct, organize, and coordinate the divisions of the Sheriff’s department and act as the department director in the absence of the Sheriff. This is a senior management position responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating department strategy and objectives in collaboration with the Sheriff.
Essential Job Functions
Manages the operations of the Sheriff’s Department through subordinate managers. Directs jail administration, the civil division, law enforcement, security, communications, and command division. Participates in the development of department strategy, objectives, and priorities. Develops and ensures compliance with departmental policy and procedures. In collaboration with the Sheriff, develops and manages budgets for the Sheriff’s department and various divisions. Projects future budgetary needs and identifies ways to reduce costs. Develops new programs, policies, or organizational changes for the purpose of improving department efficiency, reducing costs, and better serving County needs. Collaborates with Human Resources regarding human resource planning initiatives. Implements development processes for succession planning. Evaluates training and personnel needs throughout the department. Builds employee morale. Assesses staffing requirements and makes personnel-related decisions. Evaluates department programs and project initiatives in collaboration with the Sheriff. Presents and prepares reports to County Council and other stakeholders regarding department performance. Identifies and removes barriers to effective program performance. Serves as departmental liaison, representing the department at various meetings, civil, administrative, & criminal hearings, proceedings & trials, and with various stakeholders including municipal and city law enforcement organizations.
High school diploma/GED required. Bachelor’s degree in law enforcement, criminal justice, or business administration preferred. Ten (10) years of law enforcement experience, preferably working with correctional or civilian setting. Three (3) years of experience in a managerial position leading a program. Ohio Peace Officer Certificate. Light physical effort in sedentary to light work. May involve some manipulation of lightweight items (5-10 pounds) and extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation. Work may involve responding to emergency situations.
