The Council for Professional Recognition promotes improved performance and recognition of professionals in the early childhood education of children ages birth to 5 years old. The Council works to ensure that all professional early childhood educators and caregivers meet the developmental, emotional, and educational needs of our nation’s youngest children.
We are seeking an innovative and experienced communications professional to lead public relations for the Council. This role requires a great writer, communicator, and creative thinker with a strong interest in media, storytelling, and research, as well as a track record of turning great ideas into media successes. As a full-time public relations manager, you will be responsible for communicating the Council’s position on topics and issues to the media, stakeholders, and the public. You will identify opportunities to increase Council success and impact, including developing integrated communications strategies and materials and presenting recommendations to the executive team and board, with a focus on audience engagement, cultural responsiveness, and clear calls to action. You will update and implement the Council’s annual communications plan; be the Council’s key contact for media; provide strategic advice about potential and ongoing opportunities; drive thought leadership; oversee editorial content; manage communication projects and project timelines to ensure Council deliverables are on time, of quality, and within budget; and assign staff to appropriate tasks.
The ideal candidate has a strong, strategic communications background and is an enthusiastic, outgoing individual with a passion for collaborating with colleagues at all levels in a mission-driven work environment. This individual also should understand and/or have an interest in early childhood learning and education.
· Manage public relations strategy for the Council aligned with our mission, vision, and strategic plan, including media outreach, social media, digital, content, and promotional products;
· Elevate the Council’s reputation and visibility in local, national, and international communities;
· Develop communication plans, campaigns, and materials;
· Proactively develop media opportunities for Council executives and initiatives, including meetings and exhibitions, publications, and credential holder activities, and synthesize white papers, research, statements, and program materials to develop local story angles and pitches for media;
· Manage editorial content, including press releases, op-eds, advisories, fact sheets, bios, reports, messaging/talking points, pitches, PSA scripts, and radio copy;
· Develop and build on strong media partnerships inside and outside the sector, including growing our online media presence with bloggers and non-traditional media outlets;
· Support speechwriting and external presentation development in coordination with the Marketing and Communications Director;
· Create an editorial calendar, manage content, and grow audiences for a variety of communication platforms (e.g., web, videos, outreach products, social media content);
· Collaborate with marketing team to ensure Council branding and messaging are reflected in external communications;
· Monitor press coverage, track results, and communicate issues and opportunities to internal teams;
· Serve as the Council’s primary point of contact for media and the public;
· Develop promotional and instructional materials for credential holders, including tools and trainings;
· Develop and manage project deliverable timelines; and
· Supervise the public relations team and all related functions.

· Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, or related field required.
· Master’s degree in public relations, communications, or related field preferred.
· Minimum of eight years of public relations experience, with demonstrated increases in responsibility and results. Association experience preferred.
· Experience managing employees, providing feedback, and tracking progress toward deliverables and goals
· Evidence of successfully leading and managing public relations campaigns, with a track record of successful media and social engagement
· Knowledge of early childhood education issues, with direct experience preferred
· Strategy-oriented, with a proven ability to think creatively and be flexible within a changing news environment
· Exceptional speaking, writing, and editing skills
· Experience and technical knowledge of both online and offline media channels
· Tenacious and persuasive, but tactful. Knows how to get things done, overcomes obstacles, and respects others’ points of view and positions. Agile and resilient, with strong influencing skills
