Schedule: Full-Time (40 Hours/Week, Monday,Tuesday, 2p-10p. Thursday, Friday, 10p-10a)

POSITION SUMMARY (Full and Part Time Shifts Available):
The Residential Youth Counselor position is dedicated to the direct supervision and care of adolescent males living in a therapeutic group home. Working under the direction of the Residential Supervisor the Youth Counselor will carry out daily schedules, implement behavior management and treatment plans, and support the physical care of residents while being sensitive to unique clinical issues such as mental status changes, suicidal ideation/gestures, aggressive responses, medication responses, positive and negative family interactions, and increased psychiatric symptoms. Staff will create, maintain, and ensure a safe environment for residents at home and in the community.

THE PROGRAM:
The Connecticut Junior Republic’s (CJR) mission is to provide care, treatment, education and family support for at-risk, special needs and troubled young people so they can become productive and fulfilled members of their communities.

The Winchester House is a Therapeutic Group Home that serves boys ages 14 to 21, providing a physically, emotionally and psychologically safe environment for youth with complex mental health needs, all of whom are working toward more independent living. The staff at Winchester House is extensively trained to provide individual, group, family and milieu therapy for each boy. Based on individual educational and clinical needs, residents attend public and private schools, often in their hometown community. The boys are encouraged to participate in school activities and contribute to the community through volunteer work.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Ensures physical safety of youth and provides crisis intervention
  • Remains awake and alert at all times
  • Maintains a professional relationship with youth and promotes healthy relationships
  • Plans and carries out organized daily activities
  • Provides information and resources to residents and families
  • Completes assigned written reports in timely manner
  • Initiates psychiatric crisis protocols as instructed
  • Engages in weekly supervision with Residential Supervisor
  • Maintains required staff : resident ratios at all times
  • Provides supervision to residents, particularly in the community
  • Performs all duties necessary for the upkeep and maintenance of the group home including but not limited to cooking, cleaning, yard work, general maintenance, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor
  • Regular and consistent attendance.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Associate’s Degree (60 completed credits) and direct care experience, Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Ability to work with troubled youth
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to obtain and maintain the following certifications:
  • Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI)
  • First Aid/CPR
  • Medication Administration
