Job Description
The Chief Research Officer (CRO) provides administrative oversight and strategic direction for research across the organization. The Chief Research Officer is responsible for developing and implementing a single vision for research, ensuring that our research organization enhances the quality of care and ability to effectively and furthers the mission of our organization. To accomplish these responsibilities The Chief Research Officer is given the necessary authority and accountability for research organization wide.
The CRO has responsibility, accountability and authority to establish policies, procedures, standards of research practice; to assesses, determine and plan for the resources necessary to support research and insure effective and fiscally responsible staffing; to develop and implement an ongoing program to measure, and assess contributions of research; to create a work climate and philosophy that supports recruitment, retention, professional growth and ethical behavior in research; and to oversee the budget development and management of finances to support cost efficiencies while maintaining quality and effectiveness.

The CRO is charged with developing and implementing a redesigned organizational structure that serves the entire system enterprise. The goal is to create a single vision for research, ensuring that our research organization enhances the quality of care and ability to effectively administer care, and furthers our mission. Specifically, the reorganization is to facilitate the performance of research across the organization, to enhance our ability to contribute to knowledge and understanding about care delivery within, to consolidate and improve the financial management and compliance functions of research, and to provide the ability to perform precision medicine and clinical research functions seamlessly across Sutter Health. This position provides executive oversight, direction & authority with developing and implementing initiatives that transform service lines, establish a comprehensive research model, administration of grants, implementation of human subject’s protections, ethics and compliance, privacy, and information security related research. As such, the CRO works closely with the leaders within the Compliance, Privacy, and Legal departments.

Education/Licensure:
Bachelors required, M.D. or Ph.D. preferred.
Experience:
• Extensive experience in research with demonstrated increasing level of responsibility in management (8 years + recommended).
• Must have management experience in a research organization.
• Requires effective clinical management leadership and strategy expertise as typically acquired during five years.
• Proven track record of building clinical research programs and integrating physician practice models.
• Extensive leadership experience with demonstrated increasing level of responsibility in management (10 years+ recommended), preferable in a research organization.
• Previous experience in service rationalization to develop a robust service line strategy while reducing costs is necessary.
Knowledge:
• Requires expertise in care delivery models and integrated hospital and ambulatory care organizations with a working knowledge of finance, planning, physician relations, human resource management, and nursing in a highly managed care environment.
• In-depth knowledge of strategic planning methodologies and principles combined with a solid understanding of current industry trends is essential.
• Understanding of and experience with Lean or other process improvement philosophies and methodologies highly desired.
Skills:
• Proven ability to lead, challenge, and motivate members of the professional staff and medical groups.
• Effective organizational performance improvement skills, with leading highly complex dynamic teams.
• Expertise in identifying, planning, and executing successful clinical programs to meet changing organizational and community needs, and regulatory requirements.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other clinician providers, inside and outside of our organization.
• Engaging presentation skills, including the ability to tailor presentations to a specific audience, and address and interact with large groups.
• Ability to explain complex medical /clinical information and concepts in "lay" terms.
