Job Description

Concordia University Chicago (CUC) invites applications for the full-time, exempt position of Director of the University Library. The Director is responsible for management and administration of library operations to support learning, teaching, and research. He/she is a dynamic individual who exhibits a vibrant personal faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, displaying Christ-centered servant leadership and a commitment to student success. The Director seeks to integrate the mission, vision, and core values of Concordia University Chicago into his/her daily work with students, faculty, and fellow staff members.

Undergraduate certification or colloquy completion as a professional church worker in one of the education-related ministries of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and eligibility for a Divine Call as a Commissioned Minister, is preferred. This position reports to the Associate Dean of Students for Academic Resources and is located in River Forest, IL.


  • Embraces, appreciates, and promotes the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (LCMS) mission and ethos; grounds students, staff, and patrons in objective truth, integrity, and excellence; practices faithfulness to the Confessional teachings of the LCMS while forming students for vocations in church, family, and the world.
  • Prioritizes the 3 pillars of librarianship: collections, service, and library as a student & faculty destination.
  • Lead the Library's staff to collaborate effectively by aligning them around a shared 21st century vision for the university library with an understanding of current and emerging trends as well as Guidelines and Standards of the American Library Association and Association of College & Research Libraries. Identify clear goals and benchmarks to success.
  • Inspires library staff to respond to the evolving needs of CUC's faculty, undergraduates, and graduate students. Cultivates an organizational climate based upon respect, service, open communication, transparency and teamwork. Candidate must have history of being a model for respectful, transparent management based on clear communication and openness to new ideas.
  • Promotes the Library as an essential part of the University. Is an advocate for the Library as the center of academic life, study, and research as an integral part of CUC's CULearn initiative; sets the foundation for the Library to serve as a future hub of services promoting student and faculty success and high impact practices.
  • Manages Library operations as well as the hiring, training, and evaluation of library staff. Has experience identifying needs of employees and patrons and demonstrates a willingness to take action.
  • Prepares the Library's budget with a focus on acquiring and expanding the existing collection, particularly with e-resources, as well as library staff professional development. Shares library's budget with Technical Services Librarian to ensure that spending is being monitored.
  • Plans and directs the development of collections through collaborating with the needs of CUC's various academic departments and faculty members. Coordinates and develops the librarian staff's liaison role with all CUC faculty across the CUC colleges. Attends faculty department meetings.
  • Forges strong partnerships with academic departments to integrate information literacy and research skills into course/discipline curriculum.
  • Integrates Library services into student life. Promotes engaging activities to draw in students.
  • Serve as reference librarian, classroom instructor or other areas of coverage in the library as needed on a rotating weekly staffing basis.
  • Represents the University to various external consortia and Library associations.
  • Ensures that library facilities and resources are accessible to all student, faculty, and staff populations in accordance with disability legislation. Promotes accessibility to professional librarian in-person, online, via phone and email.
  • Experience and familiarity with ALMA, WorldShare, and PRIMO VE. Works with Technical Services Librarian to ensure technology is being utilized to meet the library's needs.


  • MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited program; a second advanced degree, master's or PhD, is preferred.
  • Five years of administrative experience in academic library setting.
  • Experience with new technologies related to library services and information access.
  • Knowledge of reference, circulation, cataloging, serial control, and collection development.
  • General familiarity with disciplines included in Concordia University Chicago curriculum.

  • Strong analytical, problem solving, communication, and organizational skills.
  • A demonstrated record of assessing the performance of library functions and areas, and makes timely changes to improve programs and patron services.

Minimum Experience Required:

  • Five years of administrative experience in academic library setting.

Education Requirements:

  • MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited program; a second advanced degree, master's or PhD, is preferred.
