Visual Designer

What You Will Do

Help drive the future of User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) design at one of the

world's most prestigious and innovative multidisciplinary research institutions. Join the

Communication Arts and Services (CEA-CAS) group of Visual Designers at Los Alamos

National Laboratory (LANL) to communicate LANL's mission to internal and external audiences

through the creation of intuitive and innovative web experiences.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements

Technical Knowledge

Thorough understanding of user-centered design and UX principles (information

architecture, usability, prototyping, etc.) and the ability to conceptualize, design, and

deliver best-in-class responsive web products across devices.

Demonstrated ability to distill complex information and requirements into elegant and

intuitive designs.

Demonstrated knowledge of graphic design, branding, typography, iconography,

illustration, animation, photo editing, data visualization, infographics, or interactive

graphics.

Understanding of web technologies (HTML5, CSS, JavaScript) and best practices, and

ability to deliver production-ready UI designs.

In-depth knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (we use Adobe XD for UI design), thorough

knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, and working knowledge of other relevant design

software (e.g., interactive, 3D modeling, animation, data visualization, etc.).

Technical communication

In this role, you will need outstanding written and oral technical communication skills and

the capacity to understand and interpret technical and scientific concepts.

Collaboration

Collaboration is critical in this position, so you will need experience working as a

productive member of an interdisciplinary team, including the demonstrated ability to

develop solutions for a wide range of complex design problems while effectively

networking with peers inside and outside the organization.

Customer relations

In this role, you must have a demonstrated ability to analyze stakeholder and user needs

and determine the structure, content, and format of communication products that best

meet those needs.

Project management

Project management, including establishing and maintaining budgets and schedules, is

an important part of this position. To be successful, you need to have project

management experience in guiding strategic, multi-faceted, and iterative projects with a

collaborative mindset.

Education

This position requires a bachelor's degree in design, fine arts, or related field, and a

minimum of four years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and

experience.

Desired Qualifications

Technical Knowledge

Experience creating or working within design systems, style guides, and/or component

libraries for complex and multi-faceted web products.

Cross-disciplinary skills

Cross-disciplinary skills, such as writing, editing, photography, and video production to

create communication products and knowledge of branding, publication, print, or

environmental design and production will be helpful in this position.

Experience with design and strategy for social media content across a range of

platforms.
