Job Description

Position: Family Service Assistant

Location: Cozad

Position Summary:  The Family Service Assistant is the link between families and the community, provides support to center staff, and works closely with teachers.


  • Recruit eligible families, including children with disabilities, maintain a wait list, and generate enrollment acceptance letters.
  • Maintain funded enrollment, replace open slots within 30 days of opening, and maintain a wait list throughout the program year.
  • Ensure behavioral/emotional, hearing, vision, dental and physical screenings are completed within the required time frame.
  • Ensure health service mandates are in compliance, mental health observations occur, a Child Health History is complete, and track all follow-up information.
  • Provide information to families regarding community events, parent education classes, and other items of importance.
  • Actively refer families to resources available in the community.
  • Pursue partnerships with community resources.
  • Maintain an open line of communication with families.
  • Implement Healthy Relationship Promotion initiative.

Tasks and Duties:

  • Submit paperwork in an organized, timely manner.
  • Ensure ongoing and end of year transition activities take place.
  • Attend initial and mid-year home visits along with the Teacher.
  • Assist and maintain a current center inventory.
  • Attend partner meetings and present to community organizations when requested, and if applicable.
  • Ensure children’s immunizations are up to date.
  • Document and report child abuse and neglect when observed on a firsthand basis.
  • Assist in the classroom during staff absences, or as needed.

Education Requirements:  

  • High School Diploma or GED, Family Services Certification, AA or Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or Human Services preferred.
  • Previous experience in early childhood, health, social services or related field.

Required Skills: 

  • Basic computer skills
  • Model appropriate and professional behavior.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Schedule/Hours: 81% FTE; 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday (August – May). This position has summer months off. Head Start employees who have summer months off are eligible to apply for unemployment during this layoff period.

Pay Rate/Benefits: $11.07 per hour. Due to this position beginning in the middle of a school year, the minimum hour requirement to be benefit eligible will not be met for the rest of the 20-21 school year.  This position will be benefit eligible for the 21-22 school year, which begins August 1, 2021.  Agency benefits include: paid Holidays, PTO, short term disability insurance, and Employee Assistance Program.  Other benefits available include: health, dental, vision, cancer/critical illness, accident, and voluntary life insurance, as well as retirement and flexible spending account.
