Position Summary:

This administrative and technical position resides in the Foundry Operations and plays an integral role in maintaining and advancing the technical capabilities of Columbia Steel. This position is responsible for monitoring, controlling and improving production processes to improve casting quality. This role will conduct material tests to control and optimize manufacturing operations at the foundry, collect and enters process control data and conduct root cause analysis on casting defects. This role will work with Molding personnel, Sand System Manager, Foundry Manager and Product Engineers to identify improved casting outcomes through changes in rigging, metallurgy sand specifications, etc. They will also work with the Melting Manager to improve the melting process.


  • Ensure each process worked-with and developed is conducted in safest possible way
  • Study, identify and control process variables toward standardization and reduction in variation
  • Participate in, and at times lead, the Sample process to convert new and modified castings from engineering concept drawings to approved samples
  • Use engineering principles to investigate and develop robust:
  • steelmaking practices, refinement, development
  • pouring practices
  • gating/risering practices, with the assistance of modeling programs (e.g. Magmasoft)
  • molding practice
  • cleaning practices
  • welding practices (cleaning, repair, extend, value added)
  • Heat Treat practices
  • Machining practices
  • Conduct a wide variety of metallurgical analyses in order to accurately section, prepare, and, at times, analyze the condition of materials for problem solving and/or process data
  • Write metallurgical lab reports
  • Write, review, and follow process procedures for predicable outcomes
  • Study, specify and select sand and wash types to improve casting quality
  • Initiate and coordinate special projects as needed in support of the above and other Operations Technology projects, including but not limited to process changes, new equipment recommendations, enhanced alloy offerings, etc.
  • Operate and maintain various analytical instrumentation equipment (Spectrometer, Gas analyzer, data loggers, etc.)
  • As required, utilize computing devices to collect, store, analyze, and/or report data
  • Perform root cause analysis of foundry related defects to reduce incidence and to improve casting quality
  • Interface with other Operations staff and other departments to carry out plant-wide projects
  • Work with others in Foundry Operations and with maintenance staff to ensure equipment used to produce and heat treat castings is calibrate and in optimum state
  • Obtain and/or retain the skills and/or credentials as appropriate

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understanding of the materials, equipment, processes and procedures used to produce castings
  • Knowledge of gating/risering practices for large steel castings
  • Ability to work with and interpret Magmasoft and other foundry process software at an elementary level or higher
  • Ability to solve problems with scientifically based Engineering principles
  • Knowledge of drawings and blueprints for the purpose of developing production methods
  • Ability to produce written reports suitable to describe problems and propose actions
  • Understanding of Solidworks and their application (i.e., flow, stress analyses) is helpful
  • Computer proficiency in MS Office and AutoCAD/SolidWorks
  • Desire to learn continually and stay abreast of new technology
  • Knowledge of the different sands and sand processes used in steel foundries
  • Knowledge of laboratory tests chemistry and gas analysis
  • Knowledge of mechanical, metallurgical, and engineering terminology and processes
  • Good organizational skills, self-managed, detail-focused
  • Make decisions in a constantly changing environment, and know when to move the decision elsewhere in order to accomplish assigned work
  • Familiarity with Continuous Improvement in team-oriented work environment

Education and Training:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Manufacturing Technology, Material Science, Mechanical Engineering or Metallurgical Engineering, or demonstrated equivalent
  • Familiarity with Steel foundries and green sand systems is highly desired

Typical Work Conditions:

Work conditions vary based on assigned tasks. Foundry and office conditions are equally likely. Work is performed in a heavy industrial environment as well as office space. Will routinely climb, bend, walk, sit and reach throughout the day. Anyone in this position must be able to move freely around a variety of industrial equipment. Environment includes noise, dirt, sand, dust, molten metal, sparks, and inclement weather. When required, foundry temperatures are typically 10 to 15 degrees warmer than outdoor temperatures. Noise levels exceed 85 db., so hearing protection is required.
