Visiting Instructor or Assistant Professor of History of African Art and/or Art of the African Diaspora (Two Year Appointment)
Colorado College seeks a Ph.D. or advanced graduate student, preferably with prior teaching experience, for a two-year position in art history beginning in the fall semester of 2020. The successful candidate will teach five courses each year in African arts and/or the art of African diasporas in the Americas, including African-American artists and artist collectives up to the present. The candidate’s courses will contribute to the Art History and Art Studio majors and minors, and to the Race, Ethnicity, and Migration Studies curriculum, as well as to the African Studies and/or African-American Studies minors. The candidate will have the opportunity to design their own courses, and if applicable, to propose courses in a secondary research area, such as Museum Studies and/or Architecture, to support the Museum Studies and Integrative Design and Architecture tracks within the department. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research and teaching, to the diverse perspectives of our academic community. Colorado College is a private liberal arts college that operates on a unique academic calendar. The academic year is divided into eight three-and-one-half week “Blocks,” and students take and instructors teach only one Block at a time promoting an intensive, immersive, and creative teaching and learning environment. Each course has a designated room and a group of students, no greater than 25. Instructors usually meet with the students about three hours a day, but one can choose the time and format. Salary is competitive depending on qualifications and experience and includes benefits, and additional conference and/or research funding will be provided. Completely furnished and equipped campus apartments are available for visiting faculty to rent. The college also pays for roundtrip transportation (airfare or equivalent mileage) from the instructor’s location in the U.S. The department will provide logistical support for digital images, on-line review, field trips, etc. Additional resources for the support of effective teaching on the Block Plan are available at the Crown Faculty Center.
