ColdQuanta would like to hear from experimental physicists, preferably with an expertise in Atomic Molecular and Optical (AMO) physics. We are looking for self-motivated, energetic individuals with very strong problem solving, technical, and leadership skills. Candidates having experience with Rydberg atoms, cold and ultracold atoms, and/or ion-trapping are strongly encouraged to apply.

The candidate will lead a research project whose purpose is to investigate improvements to the scaling prospects and the cycle shot rate of a quantum computer based on cold neutral atoms.

The physicist will be responsible for the management of a team of one or more Physicists, Engineers, and/or Technicians, and must be ready to grow in this leadership role as the scope of the project expands.

This position may require access to information protected under U.S. export control laws and regulations, including the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). Please note that any offer for employment may be conditioned on authorization to receive software or technology controlled under these U.S. export control laws and regulations without sponsorship for an export license.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Lead a research and development project investigating transport-based loading of an atomic qubit dipole trap array
  • Minimum 10 years professional experience post PhD in a related field.
  • Design, build, and operate lasers, optical assemblies, electronics, and experiment control systems
  • Build and run quantum computers based on cold atoms and laser, optical, and electronic sub-systems
  • Create, test, and validate mathematical models of atomic physics behavior; use calculation and modeling to inform system design
  • Teach and supervise junior team members

Requirements
  • PhD in atomic physics, optical physics, electrical engineering or related field.

  • Mechanical systems
  • Software skills:
  • Python
  • Linux (e.g. CLI, networking, virtual environments)

Desired Software Skills:
  • Agile software development of prototypes
  • Fundamentals in data structures (e.g. hash tables), algorithms (e.g. search)
  • Ability to communicate software requirements for proper software engineering
  • Familiarity with Artiq control framework and/or Sinara control hardware

Benefits

Salary range for this role is between $120,000/year to $140,000/year
