The Development Director plays a key role in ensuring the financial sustainability of the organization and the success of its programs and services through the strategic development and implementation of all fundraising activities. The Development Director will work closely with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors and lead the Development staff team. This role is salaried based around 35 hours per week, with the availability of working hybrid.

Major Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan to meet the organization’s annual revenue goals.

  • Monitor and analyze fundraising data to evaluate performance and adjust strategies as needed.

  • Assume the lead staff role in planning and executing a capital campaign to raise funds in the anticipated $2 million range to construct a new 20-stall barn. Working closely with the campaign consultant, Executive Director, and Board Chair, this work will begin with an internally led feasibility study to determine the timeline for fundraising.

  • Manage and lead a team of fundraising professionals including the Development Associate, Communications Manager, and fundraising contractors/skilled volunteers. Provide guidance, training, and support as needed.

  • Responsible for stewardship of major donors ($1,000+) and solicitation of major gifts. This includes developing strategies to engage donors, holding individual donor meetings/calls, and tracking activity in the organization’s database.

  • Build on preliminary efforts to explore and pursue sources of public funding, including the Department of Veterans Affairs Adaptive Sports Grant, the Commonwealth of VA budget, Fairfax County’s Consolidated Community Funding Pool, and Fairfax County Public Schools, consistent with efforts to diversify funding to support anticipated programmatic growth. Manage the newly established Legacy Circle, which recognizes donors who have made plans in their wills to leave a gift to Cloverleaf. Includes an annual mailing and publicizing the Circle and its members throughout the year.

  • Together with the Program Director, determine the annual grant income budget that balances program needs with projected grant revenue. Work together with the Development Associate and Communications Manager to identify new sources of grant income from private and family foundations, prepare proposals, and submit required reports.

  • Responsible for the sponsorship income line of the Polo budget, stewarding relationships with existing sponsors and supporting board and committee members in recruiting new sponsors.

  • Oversee the fundraising process and maintain records of receipts and disbursements of funds.

  • Support the Executive Director in board development work, including working closely with individual board members to engage them in fundraising activity. Serve as the staff member for the Board’s Investment Committee, which oversees the investments of the endowment fund.

  • Serve as an external ambassador of Cloverleaf, continually looking for new funding opportunities, including donations from corporations and community groups, attending meetings, making presentations, and stewarding relationships as appropriate. Together with the development team, stay abreast of emerging development trends and harness new technology as appropriate, for example, planning targeted peer-to-peer fundraising campaigns, and other online fundraisers.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Five or more years of broad-based fundraising experience, ideally including experience at a smaller organization with a modest fundraising budget and staffing. Experience should include major donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, grant writing, database management, copy writing, working with vendors, and staffing board committees.

  • Ability to create an annual development plan and related budgets.

  • Ability to work well with multiple constituencies, including volunteers, clients and client families, Board members, and other community partners.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong leadership and management skills.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Demonstrated creativity, flexibility, resourcefulness, and attentiveness to details.

  • A passion for Cloverleaf’s mission, vision, and values.

  • A creative, giving, and flexible spirit, with a willingness to try new things and make changes as needed as part of a team effort to grow the organization.

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

  • Ability to travel to external meetings in the region.

  • Remains cognizant of and adheres to Cloverleaf Equine Center’s policies and procedures, and regulations pertaining to employment with Cloverleaf.
