Ammonia Refrigeration Technician

Job Description:
We are currently accepting applications from individuals with experience ensuring stability and optimum performance within our cold storage areas of operation. The Ammonia Refrigeration Technician needs to safely operate the ammonia refrigeration system and related equipment in accordance with plant Process Safety Management (PSM) program, Risk Management Program (RMP), Corporate Safety policies and procedures. Technician is responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable operation of utilities systems (Refrigeration, Boilers, Compressed Air, and Water Supply). This entails completing utilities maintenance and operation tasks / processes; meeting all safety concerns; contribution toward installation work as it pertains to utilities systems. Responsible for diagnosing system problems and adjusting, to keep the system operating correctly. The Ammonia Refrigeration Technician is also responsible for making equipment repairs as generated from work orders. we are focused on safety and preventative maintenance.

Duties:

  • Perform Refrigeration Systems and Utility Systems (Boiler, Wastewater, compressed air, and hot water systems) established Preventative Maintenance and identify new PM activities, as needed.
  • Inspect, monitor and maintain all refrigeration, air handling, and heating systems.
  • Complete daily preventive maintenance and reports as tasks are completed.
  • Ensure compliance with state, federal, and local agencies, including OSHA and the EPA.
  • Assist in development and implementation of Process Safety Manual (PSM) and Risk Management Plan (RPM) programs.
  • Trouble shoot electrical problems.
  • Perform Mechanical Integrity Inspections.
  • Properly perform maintenance and isolation of equipment in accordance with written SOPs and maintenance procedures.
  • Perform proper line break and purge procedures.
  • Proper operation, PM and repair of other related equipment such as: boilers, air compressors, pumps, and ventilation systems.
  • Must be able to initiate line breaking permits, initiate and implement Management of Change procedures, conduct pre-setup safety reviews, initiate hot work permits, audit and certify Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, and confined spaced procedures.
  • Must be able to read Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Must be able to verify and certify standard operating and maintenance procedures.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by Upper Management.

Competencies:

· Must be able to safely isolate and pump down any section and components in the refrigeration system, perform line opening procedures, and capable of receiving or transferring ammonia in the refrigeration system.

· Must be qualified to do extensive or major repairs on:

o Ammonia compressors

o Evaporators

o Ammonia liquid pumps

o Ammonia system controls

o Refrigeration system condensers

o Air compressors

o Air system drying equipment

o Air system controls

Must have a clear understanding of refrigerant principles and concepts

· Must have working knowledge of computers and computer software.

Qualifications:

· 4-year degree preferred

  • 2 - 5 years of industrial high-speed manufacturing maintenance experience, preferably in food industry.
    1 - 3 years mechanical experience in ammonia refrigeration.
  • Technical Certification or Refrigeration Engineers Technician Association (RETA) certification (CARO or CIRO) preferred
  • HAZMAT certification is preferred
  • Two years previous operating anhydrous ammonia systems OR HVAC/R experience - or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience required
  • Effective communication skills, influential at all levels within the organization
  • Must have knowledge of state, federal, and local regulations, including OSHA and EPA with experience writing PSM
  • Experience in working safety/evacuation planning and training implementations
  • Knowledge of general warehouse practices
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills

 

Working Conditions

· Will perform duties standing or walking 90% of the time.

· Will be exposed to temperatures as low as -25 degrees Fahrenheit (repair and preventive maintenance on cooling units inside freezer) or as high as 135 degrees Fahrenheit (top of boiler to turn steam valves off).

· Will be required to lift parts and engines weighing up to 50 Lbs. as needed.

· Will be required to move up and down stairs consistently.

· Must be able to wear a respirator in the case of a HAZMAT emergency while performing extraneous duties in hot or cold environments. (see number 2 of this section).

· Will be required to perform duties on slippery surfaces due to the presence of oil, chemicals, Ice water or other substances.

· Will be required to work outdoors, under all weather conditions and at all times day and night.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
