Job Description

Position Title: Tourism & Marketing Coordinator FLSA: Exempt

Department: Administration Level: 19

Reports To: County Administrator Status: RFT

General Purpose:

The Tourism and Marketing Coordinator is responsible for a wide variety of professional duties that develop strategies, programs, and policies to promote responsible tourism, effectively manage tourism impacts, and stimulate economic development through tourism. The position assists with the creation and implementation of the countywide marketing program that effectively describes and promotes Clay County, Missouri.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develops integrated marketing, advertising, media and public relations strategy and tactics; identifies tourist demands, monitors competition and establishes needed product
  • Develops and implements comprehensive tourism development plan for Clay County
  • Develops and manages annual tourism budget; reviews and authorizes all expenditures
  • Maintains and updates the Clay County tourism website, social media outlets and other electronic/print media
  • Represents the county in cooperative local, regional and statewide promotional efforts as directed; fosters intra-governmental business, media and public awareness of tourism issues; coordinates efforts with other city and county entities including intergovernmental departments and private sector organizations as directed
  • Research, recommend, develop and administer grants and funding options to enhance the marketing of the tourism assets in Clay County
  • Utilize resources to enhance the customer experience at Clay County tourism assets
  • Develops and executes various tasks related to marketing, communications, public relations and advertising

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements tourism and countywide marketing initiatives; coordinates initiatives efforts with other city and county entities; assists with developing, facilitating and implementing programs that will assist tourism venues to reach the public; works collaboratively with County departments and outside agencies
  • Provides excellent customer service to the citizens of Clay County, business owners, volunteers and visitors
  • Develop and oversee mechanisms to measure the success and continuously improve the quality of the County’s tourism and marketing program
  • Performs a wide range of duties such as research, marketing, advertising, media and public relations, tourism development planning
  • Manage tourism budget; reviews and authorizes all expenditures in accordance with purchasing policies and ordinances
  • Develop marketing and communication plans for County programs and activities
  • Perform related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to recruit, organize and motive volunteers
  • Knowledge of national, state and regional tourism issues, policies and organizations
  • Knowledge of computers and electronic data processing
  • Prepare a wide variety of effective, professional, attractive and economical communication tools, using both traditional and social media, for a variety of audiences
  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures
  • Skill in preparing detailed reports
  • Skill in performing detailed computations
  • Skill in interpersonal (verbal and written) communications
  • Skill in using a personal computer with proficiency in Microsoft Office programs
  • Ability to effectively meet and deal with the public
  • Ability to deal sensitively with confidential material
  • Ability to use databases, spreadsheets and general office forms
  • Ability to make sound business decisions, engage in problem-solving using analytical skills
  • Ability to organize work, multi-task and prioritize tasks without direct supervision
  • Ability to demonstrate a strong work ethic and work as a team member
  • Ability to handle stressful situations

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors or Associates Degree in Marketing, Economics, Business Administration, Communications or a related field, and/or five years or more of relevant experience in a related field such as hospitality marketing/management, communications or public relations
  • Experience or specialized course work in general office methods and procedures
  • Three to five years of increasingly responsible related experience. Equivalent combination of related education and experience may also be considered
  • Valid Missouri Driver License as travel around the county is required. Additional travel may be required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working in the public sector
  • Extensive experience in a destination management leadership role at a convention and visitor’s bureau or other tourism promotion agency or an equivalent combination of training, education and experience

Minimum ADA and Physical/Mental Requirements:

  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions, communicate effectively on the telephone and in person and to hear equipment alarms
  • Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions and review, evaluate and prepare a variety of written/typed documents and text materials
  • Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate standard office equipment and personal computer
  • Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to lift up to 40 pounds, to sit and work at a keyboard and stand, lift and carry for an extended periods of time, and work in an office environment

Work Environment:

  • Work is typically performed in an office setting. The noise level in the work environment is typically moderately quiet; at times the noise level may be loud, with frequent interruptions and multiple demands

Required Travel:

  • The employee may occasionally be required to travel throughout the County; may be required to travel within and out of state
