JOB The Apparel Merchandising Assistant contributes to the Mercer Island Thrift Shop's success by maximizing store sales through skilled and efficient handling of all donated apparel, footwear, and accessories. This is a limited-term position expiring December 31, 2021. This position is under review and may be considered for ongoing funding as part of the City's budget review process. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Primary tasks include sorting, inspecting, and pricing donated apparel, footwear, handbags, and other accessories.Authenticate luxury goods.

Determine the best market segment to maximize cash contributions of high value donations. Ensure the security of those goods and follow all loss prevention procedures.Efficiently expedite inventory to the sales floor, working with a team of volunteers. Maintain a well-organized production operation following established department procedures.Maintain an organized, full, and consistent sales floor presentation.Provide timely and clear communication to staff and volunteers to support the delegation of tasks, and the status of projects.Provide department training to volunteers, Work Study students, and new staff members.Monitor inventory output and sales reports.

Set production goals to meet store needs and market demand.Execute the seasonal merchandise storage-to-floor plan, as initiated by the store management team.Support curbside donation drop off events and regular donation collection operations. Provide donors with excellent customer service. Be accessible to donors and customers to resolve issues.Handle the removal of garbage and recycling, including the transport of bulk goods for recycle.Handle the organization and cleanup of workstations and equipment at the end of each shift.Monitor the use, condition, and storage of equipment.

Troubleshoot issues and request replacements as needed.Monitor supply levels and anticipate order lead-times to maintain seamless production operations.Follow all safety requirements and proactively address any issues.Participate in a weekly supervisor meeting, and other team meetings.Support volunteer recognition activities.Maintain a flexible schedule to support expanding business operations.Other duties as assigned MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High School Diploma/GED required.Good knowledge of consumer trends in apparel, designer brand names, hallmarks for quality, and pricing methods in a secondary market.Experience in a retail environment is preferred.Knowledge of workplace safety practices.Ability to operate a computer-based Point of Sale system.Ability to listen and communicate verbally to volunteers, staff, and the public in an effective manner.Ability to handle emergency situations effectively and calmly.Ability to work in a team setting with staff and volunteers.Ability to carry out multiple tasks simultaneously and ensure timely follow through.Demonstrated problem solving skills.Conflict resolution skills.Excellent time management, attention to detail, and organizational skills.Positive, enthusiastic, and friendly demeanor.Strong written and verbal communication skills.Bilingual abilities desired.OTHER CITY REQUIREMENTS: Ability to drive a City vehicle, possess a current and valid Washington State driver's license (or ability to obtain one within 30 days of residency) and have an acceptable driving record. A current Abstract of Driving Record (ADR) will be required.Successfully passing a national criminal history background check compliant with the Child/Adult Abuse Information Act (CAAIA) is required.Acceptable personal reference check results.Completion of an I-9 Form, documenting eligibility to work in the United States.Effective October 1, 2021, all new hires to the City will be required as a pre-condition of employment to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 prior to their start date. This position requires considerable physical exertion in an environment which includes handling and movement of a wide variety of used goods, including furniture. Conditions include: Must maintain an open schedule of availability to support expanding business operations, including weekends and evenings.Stand and work an eight-hour shift with rigorous physical activity, including frequent bending, kneeling, reaching, stooping, squatting, and pushing heavy equipment.Fine motor skills to grasp, handle, manipulate objects with fingers.Lift and carry 40 lbs. using appropriate lifting techniques and moving aids.Use a computer and write or type information for others to read.Work in a two-story building, going up and down stairs frequently.Work around allergy-aggravating used merchandise.Abide by the City's smoke and drug free working environment policy.
