Animal Shelter Technician

Under the supervision of the Animal Services Manager, the Animal Shelter Technician is responsible for performing duties in the receipt, care, custody, and disposition of animals, and the operation and maintenance of the animal shelter facility. Providing technical and routine animal care services, maintaining shelter facilities, assisting with animal records inventory, conducting behavioral assessments, and responding to citizen inquiries are primary functions of this position. The Animal Shelter Technician is expected to provide a high level of humane and compassionate animal care as well as exceptional customer service.
The successful employee will be highly motivated, polite and outgoing with a professional demeanor to perform a variety of duties. This employee should possess excellent public relation, organizational, and communication skills.ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDSThe incumbent frequently works in an indoor setting, within the Animal Shelter, where exposed... to hazardous chemicals, excessive noise, and contagious diseases.
Working in an office setting with a computer is one aspect of this position with additional work in the kennels and exams rooms of the shelter or outdoors where inclement weather conditions may be present.Adverse working conditions exist within this position. This position requires some exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g., exposure to blood borne pathogens, infectious diseases, hazardous materials or chemicals, noxious odors and fumes, dangerous animals, elevated noise levels, etc.). This position may require the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).Work performed in an office environment involves use of telephones, dispatching radios, computers, office equipment, and interaction with staff, citizens and others.
Duties may include desk-related tasks. The incumbent must be able to handle all types of animals and situations including impoundment, quarantine, euthanasia, and carcass removal.The incumbent is subject to work rotating shifts and beyond scheduled hours including emergency call in potentially on weekends, holidays, and evenings. Mandatory overtime may be required with little or no advance notification.Physical activity associated with working in an office setting and the general lifting, handling, and restraint of large animals is required to perform the daily duties of this position.The nature of work requires the employee to sit and stand, at times, for prolonged periods.
Stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling are also required. The use of hands and arms is necessary to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls and to reach. Physical strength stamina is required to carry out tasks.Oral and auditory capacity enabling interpersonal communication as well as communication through automated devices such as the radio and telephone is necessary.
