Job Description
Multiple Literacy Support Specialist jobs are available with the City of Fort Worth.  We are hiring seven (7) part-time, temporary Literacy Support Specialist positions to provide support to its “100x25” Reading Instruction Program, launched during FY 2018/2019.  These individuals will work up to 19 hours weekly at two (2) Community Centers.  The Reading Instruction Program is embedded in Summer Day Camp and serves children ages 5 -13.  Expected duration for the 2020 Summer Day Camp is June 29 through August 7.  The Reading Instruction Program is managed by the Director, Education Strategies. Fundamentally, the Reading Instruction Program is built on direct instruction of a minimum of 45 minutes daily focused on the six (6) best practices of reading instruction.  These six (6) best practices are:  phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, writing, comprehension and vocabulary and oral language development.   The Literacy Support Specialist job responsibilities include: Teaches scheduled reading instruction classes and participates in other activities to further educational programming for appropriate age group. Plans courses content and method of presentation, prepares outline of materials to be covered, and submits it for approval for facility supervisor/coordinator. Selects and assembles materials to be used in teaching assignments and arranges use of audiovisual equipment or teaching aids. Conducts workshops or field trips for participants and plans and directs activities associated with projects. Monitors, collects, tracks and verifies accurate records for reporting purposes. Monitors and evaluates the quality, responsiveness, efficiency, and effectiveness of assigned programs, methods, and procedures; and works with personnel on the continuous improvement of programs and services.   Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED and six (6) months teaching experience in specialty area (reading instruction, early learning, and/or elementary education).    Preferred Qualifications: Some college preferred (at least 60-semester hours). At least three (3) years of classroom experience. Strong literacy instruction background. Experience working with younger elementary students (K-2nd). Experience working with older elementary students is beneficial (3rd-5th). Knowledge and experience in ESL. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Preference given to current or retired certified Texas teachers.   Note:  Due to COVID-19, the Summer Day Camp (SDC) Program may be affected, and these positions are dependent on having the program.  If Summer Day Camp is adversely affected , there will be no “Reading Instruction Program.”
