Airport Operations Worker

Operates one or more types of heavy motor equipment; performs skilled labor tasks, must be able to work independently; performs aircraft rescue and fire fighting duties. Must be willing to wear a company cell phone and be on emergency call.  Must be open to working a split shift if needed and regular scheduled weekend overtime.

The work in this class requires considerable skill in manipulating heavy motor equipment, manual labor and constant attention to safety of operation in order to prevent accidents.  Assignments are given by the supervisor and work is inspected periodically for safety and economy in operation. Ability to learn, understand, and remain current with Federal Aviation Administration airport regulations.   May also perform skilled labor tasks such as finishing concrete and may act as a lead man of a labor crew.  This job has a high degree of skill required and the greater consequences of errors in the form of damage to more expensive equipment.  Must be willing to work in adverse conditions and perform strenuous work.
 EXAMPLES OF WORK:  (Illustrative Only)
Operates a front-end loader, pay loader, sweeper, tractor, auger truck, snow plow;
Push mowing and tractor mowing;
Plowing and shoveling snow;
Services and makes repairs to equipment;
Orders and keeps track of materials and supplies used on jobs;
Cuts brush/trees and operates chain saw;
Building Maintenance
Work a rotational on call weekend shift;
Be on call for standby for covering A.R.F.F. (Aircraft Rescue & Fire Fighting)
Work on snow removal and related areas with little or no prior notice;
Work on special events (fly-ins, air shows, skydivers, etc.) as needed;
 Graduation from High School or GED, supplemented by training or course work in light construction and/or mechanical maintenance.  Some experience in the operation of heavy automotive equipment. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; must be able to follow safety rules and accident prevention practices;


Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
 Valid Iowa Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B with air brake and tanker endorsements and no suspensions or revocation for moving violations within the past two years.  Willing to train as an Aircraft Rescue & Fire Fighter (ARFF) and be willing to go to annual ARFF certification school (initially usually 5-7 days in length).  Must be able to pass a physical examination and stress test to wear an S.C.B.A. (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus).
