pay rate: Starting pay $28.25 per hour

Wage will be re-evaluated, with possible increase, following the completion of the POST academy.

Cottonwood Heights is currently accepting applications for a Full Time Police Officer Recruit. This recruitment is for Non-LEO Certified applicants only. Applicants must not have completed the Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) training program. Applicants that have completed the Correctional Officer or Special Functions Officer certifications are eligible to apply. The successful applicant will be enrolled in the Utah POST Training program which starts Monday, August 22, 2022. Enrollment is sponsored by the City of Cottonwood Heights.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Must have a high school diploma or equivalent (GED).

AGE: Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age at time of application deadline.

U.S. CITIZENSHIP: Must be a citizen of the United States at the time of hiring.

MEDICAL & HEALTH REQUIREMENTS: Applicants who are offered employment must undergo and successfully pass a thorough medical examination and drug/alcohol testing.

VISION: Visual acuity must be 20/20 in each eye, with or without correction. Uncorrected visual acuity must be 20/40 binocular or better for wearers of hard and semi rigid gas permeable contact lenses or glasses. Successful long-term soft daily wear contact lens wearers correctable to 20/20 are subject to no uncorrected standard. Significant loss of color and/or peripheral vision is unacceptable for public safety positions.

HEARING: Hearing loss may not be greater than 30 decibels at 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, and 2000 Hz and an average of 30 db for the four frequencies. (500, 1000, 2000, 3000)

DRIVER LICENSE: Applicants must, by date of hiring, possess a valid Utah driver license and have a satisfactory driving record.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: Prior to hiring, each applicant will be finger printed and a thorough investigation will be conducted.

Criminal Violations: Must not have been convicted of a crime for which the applicant could have been punished by imprisonment in the federal penitentiary or by imprisonment in the penitentiary of this or another state and shall not have been convicted of an offense of dishonesty or any other criminal convictions involving unlawful sexual conduct, physical violence, or the unlawful use, sale or possession of a controlled substance within the previous four years beginning with the date of conviction or plea. (Expungement of convictions obtained in this state or any other jurisdiction shall be considered for purposes of hiring).

DUI: Must not have been convicted of a DUI within the previous four (4) years beginning with the date of conviction or plea. (Expungement of convictions obtained in this state or any other jurisdiction shall be considered for purposes of hiring).

Indebtedness: Recent problems that reflect either poor judgment or lack of integrity may result in disqualification.

HIRING PROCESS will follow the below timeline:

Applicants will be disqualified if they are not prepared for each step of the hiring process. - NO EXCEPTIONS. Applicants selected to move forward in each phase of the hiring process will be notified by email.

  • Physical Agility Test: Saturday, June 11, 2022
  • Applicants are required to bring proof of a passing NPOST exam score of 80% or better, and a valid Driver's License to the physical agility test. Applicant's missing either of these items with be disqualified from the hiring process. The PT is pass/fail. Participation in the PT test is mandatory. NO EXPECTIONS.

  • Written Exam: Saturday, June 11, 2022. Immediately following the Physical Agility Test, applicants that successfully completed the Agility Test will be administer a Written Exam.

  • Panel Interview: June 15, 2022.

  • Background Investigation: Personal History Statements will be sent out to selected applicants and due back to the HR department by June 24, 2022. The police department will use the Statement to conduct a thorough background investigation.

  • Chief's Interview: Applicants selected following the background investigation will be scheduled for a final interview with the Chief of Police and City Manager.

  • Medical Examination and Drug Test: Successful applicant will be given a conditional offer of employment contingent on passing a medical examination and drug test.

  • POST Application: Applicant will be required to complete and submit the Utah POST Application for Training and Certification. The following must be submitted with the completed application; a "passport style" photograph, birth certificate, medical release form, NPOST exam results, and high school diploma (or equivalent). If applicable, proof of military service, criminal arrest records, and criminal court records. The POST Application must be submitted by July 22, 2022. NO EXCEPTIONS. The first day of POST training starts Monday, August 22, 2022. You will not be allowed entrance if your application has not been approved by POST.

Although no employment contract is offered or implied, Cottonwood Heights Police Department anticipates that the successful applicant would not act to terminate his/her employment for at least 3 years following employment by Cottonwood Heights Police Department.
