JOB SUMMARY

The job of Aquatic Specialist - Maintenance is for the purpose/s of assisting with maintaining an attractive, sanitary and safe facility and swimming pool(s) for students, staff and public; overall maintenance of facilities; controlling swimming pool chemicals; maintaining required logs; ensuring availability of equipment and/or supplies; and complying with health and safety requirements. This position is also responsible for the assisting in the care and operation of City owned water features and fountains.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Assists with maintaining pools and fountains, including proper chemical and pH rate complying with mandated safety and health requirements for pool water purity and balance, and fountain cleanliness. Maintains records/logs providing an up-to-date reference trail and/or ensuring compliance with mandated requirements.
  • Assists with inspections and cleans assigned facilities (e.g. swimming pools, pool decks, water features, fountains, equipment areas, filter systems, etc.) and performs preventive maintenance tasks and routine repairs maintaining a sanitary and safe condition.
  • Assists in evaluating equipment function for the purpose of maintaining facilities and/or complying with mandated health requirements; troubleshoots and maintains pool heaters to ensure proper working order; identifies and initiates necessary repairs for the purpose of ensuring all facilities are in proper working order.
  • Assist with ordering supplies, equipment and parts ensuring the availability of items as needed; stocks chemicals, supplies and equipment for maintaining adequate quantities and security of items.
  • Assists other personnel ensuring an efficient and effective work environment; promotes high quality customer service at all times.
  • Assists with supervising and assigning maintenance tasks to part-time/seasonal employees.
  • Assists with monitoring vendor's performance.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned within Park Operations.
  • On-call rotation; responds to any and all aquatic maintenance emergencies.


QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED). Bachelor's degree in relevant field preferred. Three (3) years' experience in commercial or municipal pool maintenance; or equivalent combination of vocational training/education and experience. Lifeguard Certification and/or basic water safety skills preferred.

Special Requirements:
  • Current Texas class "C" driver's license.
  • CPR, First Aid and AED certification required; or willingness to obtain within six months of hire date.
  • Certified as an Aquatic Facilities Operator (AFO) or Certified Pool Operator (CPO); or willingness to obtain within one year of hire date.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of plumbing, pipe fitting and electrical work; health standards and hazards; safety practices and procedures; pumps, motors, filters, automated controllers, chlorinators, heaters, and other equipment and machinery necessary to operate and to repair large public swimming pools, fountains, splashpads and related facilities.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office.
  • Skill in working with others in a variety of circumstances; working with frequent interruptions; and communicating and working with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to problem solve and create action plans.
  • Ability to perform basic electrical, plumbing, painting, masonry and carpentry work.
  • Ability to schedule activities; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment.
  • Ability to adhere to safety practices and policies; handle hazardous materials; prepare and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to perform basic math, read a variety of manuals, write documents, present information to others; and solve practical problems.
  • Ability to attend training sessions, seminars, workshops, certifications as recommended by supervisor.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is heavy and requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motions, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed where extreme temperatures, caustic substances, physical hazards, respiratory hazards, humidity, noise, vibrations, and other hazards may be encountered.
