SUMMARY Installs, modifies, and makes repairs to personal computer hardware and software systems, and provides technical assistance and training to system users by performing the following duties.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Reporting relationships, work assignments, and work schedules may be subject to change in order to meet City needs or operational requirements. Attendance at work and the ability to get along with the public, supervisors, and co-workers are essential elements of this position. Other duties may be assigned.


[Technician Level II is where employees are assigned technician duties at all levels of complexity. Some responsibility may also be assigned for providing training or assistance to lower level technicians and employees. Work is performed under general supervision. Tasks often do not have clearly defined processes. A greater level of personal initiative and self-leadership and management is required. Level II Technicians will be required to work a minimum of 2 years at this level before being advanced to a Level III Technician. Level II Technician basic skills will include the following:]

Inspects personal computer equipment and reads order sheet listing user requirements to prepare microcomputer for delivery.


Installs hardware and peripheral components such as monitors, keyboards, printers, and disk drives on user's premises.


Loads specified software packages such as operating systems, word processing, or spreadsheet programs into computer.


Enters commands and observes system functions to verify correct system operation.


Responds to client inquiries concerning systems operation and diagnoses system hardware, software, and operator problems.


Instructs users in use of equipment, software, and manuals.


Recommends or performs minor remedial actions to correct problems.


Provides updates, status, and completion information to manager, problem request tracking system, and/or users, via voice mail, e-mail, or in-person communication.


Updates documentation to record new equipment installed, new sites, and changes to computer configurations.

Inspects communications wires and cables.

Enters commands and presses buttons and flips switches on computer and peripheral equipment such as tape drive, printer, data communications equipment, and plotter, to integrate and operate equipment.


Enters commands to clear computer system and start operation.


Notifies supervisor of errors or equipment stoppage.


Answers telephone calls to assist computer users encountering problem.


Assists workers in classifying, cataloging, and maintaining tapes.

Installs security identification and apparatus to computer hardware and peripherals.


Analyzes the performance of hardware and software interfaces and identifies alternatives for optimizing the usage of computer resources.


Installs software and user utilities for modifications and upgrades of operating systems and workstation environments.


Diagnoses and resolves hardware problems.


Acts as liaison with manufacturers and vendors of software and application products, especially with regard to problem diagnosis and resolution.


Plans and executes software version upgrade releases and custom interfaces.


Installs, configures, and tests workstations with supporting hardware, software, and networking components.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES None.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; and a minimum of six (6) years direct experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.


REASONING ABILITY Able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Valid driver's license
  • Minimum of 2 years experience as a Level I Systems Technician
  • LIST Certifications

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. The employee occasionally uses hand trucks or dollies when moving large, bulky items. This position is regularly engaged in loading and unloading large, bulky boxes containing Personal Computers (PCs), Monitors, Printers, and other PC-related equipment. This position is regularly required to position and move PCs and their related components into tight spaces. Also, this position is engaged in the movement of office furniture (desks, filing cabinets, bookcases, etc... during the PC installation process at various locations throughout the City. Job duties also entail loading/unloading City vehicles, driving City vehicles, climbing stairs, and working with wiring overhead. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
