General Maintenance Worker

Job Description

Job Summary:   Performs general maintenance and repair of equipment and buildings requiring practical skill and knowledge (but not proficiency) in such trades as painting, carpentry, plumbing, masonry, floor installation, and electrical work.

Excluded are a. Craft workers included in a formal apprenticeship or progression program based on training and experience; b. Skilled craft workers required to demonstrate proficiency in one or more trades; c. Workers performing simple maintenance duties not requiring practical skill and knowledge of a trade (e.g., changing light bulbs and replacing faucet washers).

Primary Tasks:

  • Replaces electrical receptacles, wires, switches, fixtures, and motors
  • Patch minor holes and cracks in walls and ceiling using plaster or compounds
  • Repairs or replaces concrete floors, steps, and sidewalks
  • Replaces damaged paneling or floor tiles
  • Hangs and installs doors and locks
  • Replaces broken windowpanes
  • Performs general maintenance on equipment and machinery
  • Preps, masks, textures, and paints surfaces of interior and exteriors of structures and equipment
  • Replaces and/or repairs faucets, sinks, toilets, and tub surrounds
  • Removes door casings, floor coverings, including tack strips or adhesives
  • Replaces floor tiles
  • Perform all other work duties assigned

Required Education, Skills and Experience:

MINIMUM:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in two (2) or more Maintenance Trades
  • General knowledge and experience of basic hand and power tools associated with the level of work assigned. Ability to obtain and maintain a favorable National Agency Background Check (T1)
  • Knowledge of acceptable construction maintenance practices including Occupational Safety and Health regulations
  • Knowledgeable and competent to operate hand tools and power tools
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Must be able to perform simple tasks independently after being given specific instruction
  • Ability to lift 50 lb. and team lift 51 lbs. or more
  • Must be able to communicate clearly (oral and written) in the English language
  • Dependent on trades department assigned to, the applicant must have the ability to complete required training for fall protection and/or confined space training and maybe qualified for respiratory wear

PREFERRED:

 Previous experience of working in three (3) or more Maintenance Trades

Other Requirements:

  • Must be able to drive a company vehicle and be insured.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance if necessary.
  • Must comply with all company policies.
  • Must remain in good standing with the local Teamsters 959 Union.

 Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for bending, stooping, sitting, walking or standing for prolonged periods; most of the time is spent in a  standing position with frequent opportunity to move about. As a normal function of this job you will lift 50 lbs regularly, and up to 75 lbs. by team lift. This position requires manual dexterity sufficient to use hand tools.  Must be able to work in tightly confined spaces and be knowledgeable with proper personal protective equipment (PPE).

 Work Environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be borne by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

 Environments will include a variety of working conditions.  Work environments include, but are not limited to, multiple types of housing units, industrial facilities and performing work both inside and outside by the majority.  The use of PPE or respirators may be required.
