Children’s Hospital Medicine Program is a collaborative medical practice of pediatricians and pediatric nurse practitioners who specialize in the care of hospitalized infants, children and teenagers. This is a 24/7/365 on-site service at both the Minneapolis and St. Paul hospital campuses.
The Medical Director role at Children’s has overall responsibility for ensuring that services and programs provided through the department or service line are patient and family focused, clinically appropriate, operationally efficient, and achieve effective patient outcomes. The focus of the Medical Director's administrative time will be spent developing and providing direction for the program (clinical services, clinical research, and education), including quality and safety leadership and improvement. Partners with administrative dyad partner for financial and administrative management of the service line. The role will coordinate clinicians associated with the department or service line, clinician consultants, and leaders of associated programs or units. The role will also monitor and support the clinical skills and involvement of professional staff associated with the department or service line and will increase or expand those resources as appropriate to meet current and future needs
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Have overall medical administrative responsibilities for the Hospitalist Department, including program design and implementation, quality assurance, program direction and such other duties as may from time to time be assigned.
- Develop and provide direction for clinical services, clinical research, professional and public education, including quality leadership and improvement.
- Pair with administrative colleagues for financial and administrative management of the service line/department, as well as strategic planning.
- Monitor and support the clinical skills and involvement of professional staff associated with the Hospitalist Department and manage those resources as appropriate to meet current and future needs.
- Supervise all employed hospitalist physicians and the associate clinical director of advanced practice providers.
- Meet regularly with the quality and safety physician and administrative leadership, the Chief of Pediatrics and the Vice Chief Medical Officer
- Keep informed with respect to new clinical knowledge and support introduction of evidence-based changes to improve patient care;
- Respond to and resolve complaints from family or staff;
- Provide an annual written review of the quality of services provided in the Hospitalist program to PEC and Children’s Board Quality Committee;
- Model the high Children’s Way values in a consistent and reliable manner;
- Participate in continuous quality improvement processes within Children’s;
- Participate in philanthropic meetings for the program; and
- Sign off on budgets for department with dyad partner.
- Serve as the primary clinical liaison, coach, and mentor.
- Collaborate with the Hospitalist team to establish program goals and objectives consistent with those of the hospital.
- Develop and provide input on the development of Hospitalist program initiatives.
- Demonstrate positive interpersonal relationship with colleagues, referring clinicians, hospital personnel, and patients/families in order to achieve maximum operational effectiveness and customer satisfaction.
- Attend local and national meetings and conferences to remain current regarding issues relevant to the performance of duties.
- Must have an M.D., D.O. or equivalent degree from another country with a current Minnesota Medical License or the ability to obtain one.
- Board BE/BC in Pediatrics from the American Board of Pediatrics.
- Minimum 5 years experience as a practicing physician in hospital medicine.
- Leadership experience and familiarity with quality improvement work, safety initiatives, systems-based practice, patient-centered care.
- Clinical competency and expertise in caring for hospitalized children.
- Demonstrated history of positive relations with colleagues, support staff, hospital-based providers, administrators, and patients.
- Ability to be successfully credentialed by both Hospital and Third Party Payers.
