Job Description

The Area Director of Operations is responsible for the oversight and performance of all activities related to the assigned locations. This position will be responsible for driving the organizational goals and strategies for business development, operational performance, patient satisfaction and employee engagement for the locations. This position will work collaboratively with the different areas within the organization to drive sales, motivate employees to exceed their operational targets, create and implement standardized operating procedures, maintain regulatory compliance, deliver patient quality outcomes, take responsibility for departmental budgets and financial decisions while assisting senior leadership with decisions regarding new business and expansions. This position will require travel to the locations every 3-6 months to engage with local leadership.

REPORTS TO: Regional Director of Operations

SUPERVISES: Director of Patient Care Services


Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance or management-related field (or similar) is required.

Experience: 5+ years of experience in hospice, home health, or related field

5+ years of experience in a leadership role for a healthcare organization

Core Competencies: Strong leadership and communication skills with a strong knowledge of market trends, performance evaluation principles and metrics, operational optimization, payer and vendor management, knowledge of Medicare and Medi-Cal/Medicaid regulatory requirement and a strong business acumen.

Other: Valid driver’s license and auto insurance.


1. Work with the business development regional leads to build a strong market sales strategy to support budgeted expectations and serves as a liaison with community partners to help coordinate and deliver high quality patient care.

2. Responsible for the financial, operational, and quality performance of all locations using data-driven metrics and standardized operational policies and procedures.

3. Responsible for driving key performance metrics on a daily, weekly, monthly basis with the locations to support strategic and operational excellence.

4. Responsible for championing organizational culture by leading employee engagement initiatives and staff development while serving as a role model for the organization’s mission, vision, and values.

5. Works with local site leadership to ensure compliance to federal and state regulatory requirements as well as ensuring that all sites are survey ready and compliant.

6. Responsible for hiring, retention and development of personnel while managing the appropriate staffing levels and productivity expectations.

7. Responsible for pro-active communication with the local sites on a regular cadence to communicate organizational goals, targets and key performance metrics and work collaboratively with the sites to develop action plans to ensure high performance.

8. Responsible for managing staff performance and timely completion of probationary and annual reviews and ensuring that all sites have completed their required compliance education in a timely manner.

9. Participates in the development, approval, communication and adherence of operational policies and procedures for the organization.

10. Works closely with shared services departments such as HR, Payroll and Finance on hiring strategies, job description development, salary band reviews, pay practices and the management of revenue and expense ratios to meet budgeted expectations.

11. Works collaboratively with the Corporate QAPI and Education teams to ensure sites have a QAPI plan and are tracking and monitoring progress to goal while supporting local sites by facilitating education and training as needed.

12. Responsible for monthly EBIDA targets and census growth expectations for the sites while monitoring and managing spend and developing cost reduction strategies as needed.

13. Leads regular operational review meetings and participates in executive meetings to provide updates on any key projects and initiatives while also assisting leadership with any system/process/policy rollouts.

14. Responsible for site visits and engaging with site leaders in person every 3-6 months.

15. Serves as a backup as an Area Director of Operations for other sites as needed and also responsible for all other duties as assigned.
