Charleston Oncology is a fast paced, high volume oncology practice that focuses on the very highest quality patient care delivered by knowledgeable, experienced and caring staff. The practice has 5 offices in the Charleston area, West Ashley, Downtown, Mt. Pleasant, North Charleston and Carnes Crossroads. This position will, on occasion, rotate between the North Charleston office and Carnes Crossroads office.

Job Summary

The Pharmacy Tech assists the pharmacist with prescription management and communicates with physicians regarding oral oncology medications; communicates with patients over the phone or in person; answer questions regarding medications; confirms patient information on prescription labels before dispensing medications; manages inventory and orders all medications; monitors patient progress with medications; and complies with all federal, state and local laws, including but not limited to HIPAA, OSHA, ADA, ACA, etc., health and safety standards; performs other responsibilities as assigned by the Pharmacy Manager.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Process prescriptions and support medications; enter and updates patient prescription data in software system;; manages inventory, ensures proper storage and handles and disposes hazardous medications.
  • Keeps patient contact information current for continuation of therapy (refills); answers incoming calls to assist patients with their questions; monitors patient follow-up appointments and obtains prior authorizations for oral medications.
  • Creates a letter of appeal and submits to third party for any rejected oral authorizations; provides assistance for high co-pays, deductibles; applies for free drugs; applies for co-pay cards for commercially insured patients.
  • Receives (via ERX, fax, email, telephone, walk-in), processes and submits prescription refill request, after reviewing patient's clinic notes; investigates benefits to determine PBMs mandatory specialty pharmacy,
  • Handles all Pioneer related issues and concerns; assist physicians, nurses and medical assistants with order entry of new medications in IKM Gen 2, and contacts drug reps as needed for samples or drug information.
  • Complies with all federal, state and local laws, including but not limited to HIPAA, OSHA, ADA, ACA, etc., health and safety standards, etc.

Qualifications and Skills
  • High school graduate, GED or Associate degree; certified pharmacy technician preferred. At least 2 years experience as a pharmacy technician, prior authorizations and financial assistance experience is helpful;
