Job Description

This Software Architect provides overall structure design and architectural approaches for our Public Safety and Justice development team. They will perform aspects of multiple roles on the team including mentoring and training engineers, solving highly complex and challenging problems with their advanced coding skills, and creating new processes to achieve greater efficiencies in developing quality products. As a valuable technical resource for the organization, our Software Architect will be key in designing architecture that maximizes the use of our state-of-the-art technologies, methodologies, and development environments.

Job Duties:

  • Work with other Software architects on architecture designs and decisions and make recommendations for improvements
  • Perform system definition, architecture development, requirements decomposition, software development, and system integration and testing over the multiple phases of projects
  • Define web application components, services, hardware and software specifications, and non-functional requirements to meet performance and scalability demands
  • Lead a technical investigation and do complex technical development plans
  • Lead their team in the delivery of work against the agreed upon definition of completion
  • Complete Scrum Master training and fulfill role of Scrum Master by guiding Scrum training sessions, contributing to Scrum Governance, and leading agile Scrum meetings
  • Prepare for, present, and oversee formal design and code reviews
  • Provide technical and work guidance to the team, actively ensuring production of quality code and advocating toward delivering high quality solutions the first time
  • Engage in the production and review of advanced software documentation
  • Oversee the transfer of technical knowledge across the team to ensure training and knowledge transfer goals for the organization are attained
  • Interact and communicate on a technical level with external entities to ensure compliance with requirements and accreditation for application releases
  • Communicate with and conduct software demonstrations for internal and external customers
  • Research and present new ideas, technologies, and concepts to their team and develop plans for remediation
  • Develop framework level classes and implement changes without compromising the system
  • Select appropriate platforms and tools to support the needs of project initiatives
  • Make suggestions for foundation object changes and develop new objects to include in foundation classes
  • Proactively select Product Backlog Items and commit to a timely delivery
  • Identify refactoring opportunities and technical debt issues to bring to the Product Owner
  • Perform peer testing of functional changes
  • Design solutions that promote quality and are intentionally architected to provide quality outcomes
  • Design and document database strategy, patterns, and architecture
  • Conduct system functional analysis including trade studies and white paper analysis as needed
  • Create testable requirements and map test cases and scripts to documented requirements
  • Work closely with Support to effectively diagnose field escalated issues and identify appropriate resolutions
  • Partners with QA to identify testing tools
  • Lead team in creating coding standards, best practices documentation, and quality release notes
  • Lead team in defining and adhering to processes around team agreements, schedule, and rules of engagement while holding them accountable to act on retrospective action items
  • Lead team in the adoption of methodologies, technologies, and techniques across product platforms
  • Assist in scheduling and coordinating projects including assigning tasks and defining the development process
  • Provide level-of-effort estimates, giving and soliciting feedback on technical portions of projects to develop the approach for a given product proposal
  • Be a Subject Matter Expert on multiple technical topics, provide architecture guidance, and work as the technical advisor across Agile teams
  • Develop technical training material and lead training sessions for the other developers and functional areas
  • Promote agile processes and provide technical guidance to groups outside of the development team
  • Support the development teams with software, test, and integration challenges


  • Bachelor's or Master’s (preferred) Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or similar, or equivalent experience
  • 7+ years of professional development experience, including developing complex systems and working in an Agile/Scrum environment
  • Expert knowledge of Scrum values, principles, and practices and ability to mentor other Scrum Masters
  • Extensive experience in software architecture, framework development, and software application design, implementation, and testing
  • Expert knowledge of programming languages being used within their team
  • Able to quickly obtain an expert level knowledge of product framework and infrastructure and translate concepts into work packages
  • Expert knowledge in database development, backend, and structure, being able to define strategy for database optimization and best practices
  • Expert knowledge in designing tables, databases, and relationships using standard normalization rules
  • Expert in writing efficient SQL queries and analyzing them for performance optimization
  • Expert knowledge of Test Plan development, Testing Procedures, and Test Cases for complex subsystems
  • Comprehensive knowledge of unit test mocking and can apply mocking concepts to improve unit test quality and performance
  • Expert in performance tuning and solving complex optimization issues
  • Self-starter who can work independently in a self-managed team environment
  • Proven track record as a subject matter expert in multiple areas for both internal and external customers
  • Ability to master new technologies and concepts and find innovative solutions
  • Ability to lead functional areas, organize the team, provide light coaching and direction, assign tasks, and measure deliverables
  • Understand the value of effective communication and work as part of a team to promote communication within it
  • Proven track record presenting for and facilitating design and development meetings
