Catholic Charities is proud of its 90-plus year history of providing vital social services in our Diocese. Today, we maintain a substantial presence in ten communities throughout the twenty-eight counties of central Illinois. Area Offices operate in the communities of Alton, Carlinville, Decatur, Effingham, Granite City, Mattoon, Quincy, and Springfield. In addition, Catholic Charities manages facilities in Alton (Catholic Children's Home) and Beardstown (The St. Anne Residence). The agency has earned national reaccreditation through COA, the Council on Accreditation for Children and Family Services, which certifies that all programs meet best practice social service standards. This certification is the result of a monumental effort by Catholic Charities staff throughout the Diocese working together to modify and improve the delivery of services to our deserving clients.

The agency partners with many volunteers who are dedicated to the success of the local Catholic Charities operations. Advisory boards are excellent examples of such partnerships. The local advisory boards are comprised of special individuals who serve as the agency's vital link to the needs of our communities; they provide invaluable advocacy and support. Over the years, these advisory boards have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to ensure that the mission of Catholic Charities remains viable and responsive.

Our vast array of "Continuum of Care" services include counseling programs, senior services and guardianship, health care, residential care, independent living; special education, emergency shelter care, family preservation services, food and clothing distribution, St. John's Breadline, Meals on Wheels in Decatur, crisis assistance, Med-Assist, Mobile Food Pantry, Catholic Charities Legal Services, The St. Anne Residence and discount resale stores. Catholic Charities seeks to respond to the needs of its communities through these diverse programs. Every year, this objective is realized as literally thousands of children and families are positively impacted by our efforts.

Catholic Charities of Coles, Douglas and Edgar Counties (aka: Mattoon Catholic Charities) is seeking a dynamic leader for the position of Area Director. Mattoon Catholic Charities has been providing services for over 25 years and is an operating division of Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois, which is a registered Illinois Not for Profit corporation with 501 (c)(3) status. Catholic Charities is nationally accredited through C.O.A. meeting and exceeding best practice standards for service organizations.

Mattoon Catholic Charities operates a large Resale Store, Food Pantry, Legal Services and various outreach and emergency assistance programs. The agency is supported by many volunteers and a local Advisory Board. Job Summary:

Responsible for day to day coordination of direct service programs through the supervision of the direct service supervisors; to provide management of the area office including budget, board interactions, community liaison responsibilities, building maintenance and provide appropriate recommendations to the Director of Operations regarding personnel issues. It is the role of the Area Director to implement the mission of Catholic Charities through the existing programs.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for the supervision and approval of the day to day operations of the area office and the programs offered.
  • Responsible for the supervision of all staff including the therapists, foster care and adoption, support and maintenance staff within the area office.
  • Responsible for community relations development including involvement in the local United Way.
  • Responsible for ongoing relations, organization and solicitation of appropriate reviews with the area advisory board.
  • Responsible for the provision of direct services as assigned by Executive Director or his designee.
  • Responsible for keeping the Director of Operations informed, on a regular basis, of the problems, progress, successes and needs of the area office and the area advisory board.
  • Provide assigned direct services on a regular basis as needed with individual cases.
  • Provide supervision of professional staff of the office on an individual or group basis.
  • Ensure timely completion of all required documentation related to all programs.
  • Provide liaison responsibilities within Catholic Charities organization and between Catholic Charities and other community organizations.
  • Direct and make recommendations regarding all area office personnel including hiring, terminations, discipline and evaluations adhering to all agency policies and procedures in the performance of these duties.
  • Oversee the mechanical and housekeeping duties of the area office.
  • Serve as fiscal officer for the area office approving all purchases within specified agency guidelines.
  • Maintain positive and professional community contacts with local agencies including United Way, DCFS, courts, policy, city, etc.
  • In coordination with the Child Welfare Department arrange for in-house staff development. (in offices with Child Welfare Services)
  • Establish and participate in regularly scheduled consultations with Director of Operations to report on the progress and issues relevant to the area office operations.
  • Provide information and program updates to the area advisory board concerning the operations of the office.
  • In conjunction with the area advisory board, Director of Finance and Operations and the Executive Director develop the proposed annual budget and monitor the budget on a monthly basis.
  • Assist the area advisory board in meeting bylaw requirements for meeting notices, minutes, selection of new board members, meeting agenda, etc.
  • In conjunction with the area advisory board, monitor the manuals of policies and procedures for recommended changes to the Executive Director.
  • In conjunction with the area advisory board, provide an ongoing assessment of community needs and services.
  • Assist in the development of new programs with advice and direction from the area advisory board.
  • Participate in planning, development and implementation of new or expanded programming under the direction of the Executive Director.
  • Work in a positive, cooperative spirit with the Child Welfare Department of Administration in developing, enhancing and maintaining the quality of existing program.
  • Report to the Director of Operations needs and problems with personnel within the area office and follow existing procedures.
  • Other Duties as assigned


Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities, Education and Experience:
  • Master's degree in a human service related field plus a minimum of three years experience in supervision, preferably in a social service discipline.
  • Maturity, flexibility and demonstrated initiative.
  • Ability to pass all required tests.
