CareMount Medical, P.C., has multiple physical therapy locations in Westchester and Dutchess counties. Our highly trained team works closely with our orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, and pain management physicians to deliver the highest quality of care to our patients. We treat a wide array of musculoskeletal and neurologic conditions including osteoarthritis, generalized weakness, balance disorders, Parkinson's and Multiple Sclerosis. Patients range in age from 8 to 98 and the goal is to return them to a maximum functional level as well as abate pain. This is accomplished through individualized treatment programs designed by each physical therapist.

Position Overview: The Certified Hand Therapist restores patient's function, alleviates pain, and prevents disabilities by planning and administering medically prescribed occupational therapy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Meets the patient's goals and needs and provides quality care by assessing and interpreting evaluations and test results; determining physical therapy treatment plans in consultation with physicians or by prescription.
• Helps patient accomplish treatment plan and accept therapeutic devices by administering manual exercises; instructing, encouraging, and assisting patients in performing physical activities, such as non-manual exercises, ambulatory functional activities, and daily-living activities and in using assistive and supportive devices, such as crutches, canes, and prostheses.
• Administers physical therapy treatments by giving massages; initiating traction; applying physical agents; utilizing hydrotherapy tanks and whirlpool baths, moist packs, ultraviolet and infrared lamps, and ultrasound machines; directing treatments given by aides, technicians, and assistants.
• Evaluates effects of physical therapy treatments and fit of prosthetic and orthotic devices by observing, noting, and evaluating patient\'s progress; recommending adjustments and modifications.
• Completes discharge planning by consulting with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other health care workers.
• Assures continuation of therapeutic plan following discharge by designing home exercise programs; instructing patients, families, and caregivers in home exercise programs; recommending and/or providing assistive equipment; recommending outpatient or home health follow-up programs.
• Documents all patient care in electric health record utilizing appropriate templates where applicable.
• Maintains patient confidence by keeping information confidential.
• Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
• Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.
• Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs.
• Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
• Develops physical therapy staff by providing information; developing and conducting in-service training programs.
• Complies with federal, state, and local legal and professional requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions.
• Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

Typical Working Conditions:

  • Work is primarily done both at hand table as well as in therapy gym area. Duties include directing and instructing patient treatment programs, fabrication/adjustment of splints prescribed by MDs and computerized documentation of same.

Qualifications and Education:

  • Graduation from a school of Occupational or Physical Therapy accredited by the American Occupational or Physical Therapy Association; and five years of practical experience demonstrating expertise in the area of hand/upper extremity therapy; and certification by HTCC (Hand Therapy Certification Commission) as a CHT (certified hand therapist).
  • Employees in the classification must be licensed as an Occupation or Physical Therapist in the State of New York.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, methods, material and equipment required for hand therapy including splint fabrication and functional adaptive equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of anatomy and physiology as they relate to hand/upper extremity therapy.
  • Considerable knowledge of possible hazards to patients during treatment and of necessary precautionary measures.
  • Ability to supervise staff of clinicians.
  • Ability to interpret correctly patients' reactions to all types of hand therapy treatments.l
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with therapy staff subordinates, professional employees and patients.
  • Ability to determine and to instruct others in determining the proper length and intensity of individual treatments.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the physically and mentally disabled patients.
  • Ability to maintain adequate work reports and to prepare periodic reports of treatment.
