SUMMARY
Under supervision of the Nurse Manager and in collaboration with other team members, the Licensed Practical Nurse provides direct and indirect patient care in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act, professional standards of care, state regulations and accreditation standards. The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is responsible for rendering nursing care in the assigned area, with regard to the individualized client needs, and established standards based on the scope of practical nursing.
Role and Responsibilities
- Participates in patient treatment regimen, including administering medications (under the supervision of a physician and registered nurse).
- Assists in phlebotomy: identifies patient, checks requisition form for requested tests, and prepares equipment, patient and puncture site.
- Assists in IV set-up: verifying solution to be administered, evaluating infusion site, checking IV function and patient comfort, and discontinuing IV at appropriate time, as ordered by MD.
- Performs routine immunizations, nebulizer treatments, and visual acuity testing, and administers and reads TB tests.
- Monitor patient’s vitals and record them in their file
- Maintain the cleanliness and comfort of each patient, including bathing, feeding and dressing
- Assist nursing and medical staff with basic medical tasks, such as administering medication
- Establishes and documents patient treatment regimen under supervision of RN or MD and implements treatment.
- Maintains adequate inventory of examination room supplies and prepares exam rooms at the beginning and end of day and between each patient contact.
- Explain treatments and procedures to patients and families
- Facilitates and assists in the coordination of patient referrals.
- Change dressings and bandages, ensuring patients are healing properly
- Move patients from wheelchairs, beds and gurneys
- Performs variety of office responsibilities: answers phones and takes messages and performs triage within scope of licensed practical nursing practice in an accurate and timely manner.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited LPN program
- At least 1 year of clinical experience in ambulatory setting
- Current North Carolina or Compact License
- Problem-solving skills
- Valid BLS CPR Certification
- Non-exempt from Medicaid/ Medicare
- Ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, physicians and hospital staff.
- Basic computer skills.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in Home Health Care, or Ambulatory Care setting preferred.
- Experience in Emergency Department or Intensive Care a plus.
- Follows facility and OSHA safety rules and procedures while on assignment
- Follows facility protocols, rules, and regulations
- Respects cultural and religious practices of patients
- Upholds HIPAA regulations
- Punctual and dependent for assigned/confirmed shifts
- Cognitive skills as related to the position
- Professional, friendly attitude.
