Job Overview: 

The Modeling and Simulation Engineer is responsible for solving challenging multi-physics and techno-economics optimization problems and advancing modeling and simulation applications of Carbon America’s products and services, i.e. cryogenic carbon capture and related technologies.  

This position will own the development and use of the engineering models and tools, which will exist in custom software created in Julia, Python, and Simulink. Critical to this role is a deep understanding of physics, mathematics, and programming. This role will be responsible for the development of modeling standards and baseline architecture by which all systems will be modeled, validated, and optimized. 

As a Principal-level employee this position will supervise and mentor other engineers. Having a Principal title implies that this position will need to aid in strategic decisions for Carbon America’s R&D program. The Principal Engineer will also be expected to represent Carbon America in various external facing activities such as, but not limited to: Department of Energy engagement, partnership discussions, and investor relationships.  


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: 


Required 

  • 6+ years of experience in mathematical modeling for engineering applications 

  • Expertise in building custom engineering software tools 

  • Expertise in developing the right mathematical model for the job (not too simple to be inaccurate, but not too complex to be slow or finicky) 

  • Understanding of software engineering best practices 

  • At least a basic knowledge of heat transfer 

  • At least a basic knowledge of fluid dynamics 

  • At least a basic knowledge of thermodynamics, especially fluid state calculations and liquid/vapor equilibrium modeling 

  • Experience in a programming language, e.g. Julia, Python, C++ 

  • Ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively as needed 

  • Excellent communication skills, including active listening skills 

  • MS, or PhD (Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or Physics preferred); if BS, then additional years of experience preferred. 

 

Preferred 

  • Expertise in solving differential equations,
