Job Overview:

The Principal Mechanical Engineer with Turbomachine Design specialty will have a deep knowledge of various types of types of compressors and expanders, e.g., axial, and centrifugal. You will know how to select and optimize turbomachines for a given application. You will know how to design the aerodynamics as well as the mechanical system (shaft, bearings, etc.). You will work with external consultants to develop turbomachines for Carbon America’s systems, as well as work on internal development of turbomachine equipment.

As a Principal-Level employee this position will supervise and mentor other engineers. This position will aid in strategic decisions for Carbon America’s R&D program. The Principal Engineer will also be expected to represent Carbon America in various external facing activities such as, but not limited to: engagement with the Department of Energy, partnership discussions, and investor relationships.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:


Required

  • Turbomachine design experience

  • 6+ years of experience in a related field

  • CAD (e.g. SolidWorks, AutoCAD) expertise

  • Demonstrated knowledge of engineering principles and practices

  • Excellent communication skills, including active listening skills

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to track lots of disparate details

  • BS in Engineering (e.g. Mechanical, Aerospace, Chemical preferred)

Preferred

  • Management experience

  • MS, or PhD in Engineering (Mechanical, Aerospace, Chemical preferred)

  • Experience with costing out heat exchangers from a bottoms-up perspective

  • Knowledge of heat exchanger manufacturing techniques

  • Knowledge of compressor or turbine design

  • Expertise in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics

  • Knowledge of TEMA standards and ASME pressure vessel codes

  • CFD experience
