Under the direction of the GEAR UP Project Director, the GEAR UP Program Assistant provides support to the GEAR UP project and the Project Director by providing advising and mentoring services to cohort students; collaborating with the Project Director and other stakeholders fostering engagement in activities related to college preparation, career exploration, the development of other key competencies tied to the goals of the grant; and assisting with data collection and management as well as other administrative tasks.
This program is funded by a $25.8 Million Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) grant as implemented by the United States Department of Education.
An Associate’s degree in an appropriately related field, together with one year of experience providing services in an educational or community service setting; or a combination of education, training, and experience which would lead to the competencies required for the successful performance of the position’s essential duties.
The successful candidate must have experience in the following:
- Using office productivity tools and teleconferencing applications to communicate and collaborate, including Microsoft 365, Google’s Docs, and platforms like WebEx or Zoom.

A Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriately related field; experience working with youth and families in underserved communities; fluency/proficiency in Spanish.
Examples of JOb Duties:
The GEAR-UP Program Assistant is responsible for providing individual and group advising or mentoring to middle school students; supporting students in meeting academic demands and in persevering through obstacles; assisting students with academic and study skills, such as critical thinking and test-taking strategies; fostering success in remote learning environments; promoting communication and serving as an advocate for students, reporting concerning behavior, making referrals, and providing resources; building relationships with teachers and school staff; attending and participating in staff, faculty, committee, informational and/or professional meetings in-person or remotely; assisting with program design and implantation in such arenas as college awareness and preparation, career exploration, financial literacy, positive self-development, growth, and decision-making; assisting with data management and other administrative responsibilities for the grant; other related duties supporting the implementation of the GEAR UP program to students and their families.
$27.76 per hour
