CLA SoCal seeks an enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and compassionate individual who will thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced public interest law firm. The Expungement Contract Staff Attorney will work as part of the Expungement Unit to assist low-income clients by conducting client interviews, preparing pleadings, motions, and other related legal documents in connection with expungements and... post-conviction relief.
The Expungement Attorney will focus on providing legal services to CLA SoCal clients primarily in Orange County. This part-time temporary position will report to the Directing Attorney.Responsibilities: Conducts client interviews to determine whether clients are eligible for expungement, dismissal, reductions, juvenile sealing, or certificate of rehabilitation. Prepare pleadings, motions and other related legal documents in connection with expungements and post-conviction relief, which include but are not limited to, Criminal petitions that handles dismissals under PC sections 1203.4, 1203.4a, 1203.49, 1203.41, 1203.42,1203.43 and 17(b); prop 47, juvenile sealing, and certificate of rehabilitation.
Organizes and conducts monthly Saturday clinics, including training and recruiting volunteers and law students for the monthly clinics. Maintain detailed and accurate case notes and timekeeping in case management system (Legal Server). Interview clients.
Effectively and efficiently communicate with clients. Engage in case investigation, factual and legal research. Research and draft pleadings, memoranda, correspondence and other legal documents.
Train, direct and supervise the legal work of the clinical law students, interns, volunteers. Identify wrap around legal services and work collaboratively with CLA SoCal's various legal units. Work with a trauma-informed multi-cultural perspective of inclusion and diversity.
Follow all organizational and grant compliance policies and procedures. Perform other duties as required to meet the needs of the organization.Requirements: Strong interest and desire to work to eliminate barriers to employment and housing for individuals with criminal records. Knowledgeable in the substantive areas of criminal law and criminal procedure; able to provide assistance with dismissals under PC sections 1203.4, 1203.4a, 1203.49, 1203.41, 1203.42, 1203.43 and 17(b); prop 47, juvenile sealing, and certificate rehabilitation - Preferred.
Juris Doctor degree and/or an active member in good-standing of the California Bar or member to another state bar and ability to register as a legal services provider. Articulate, creative, and passionate advocate with excellent written and oral communication skills, computer skills, and problem-solving skills. Strong personal work ethic, initiative, and ability to organize time, manage diverse activities, and meet critical deadlines with minimal supervision.
Ability to spot legal issues and comfort with providing real-time counsel & advice Strong interpersonal skills, client communication skills and comfort working with indigent clients Strong technical skills; including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams). Reliable team player. Great organizational skills with keen attention to detail.
Desire to learn as well as share knowledge with other team members. Empathetic and energetic attitude while working with others. Ability to interact with a wide range of clients utilizing client-centered lawyering and trauma-informed frameworks.
