Director of Aquatics & Youth Activities

SCHEDULE: This is a full time position that does not have a set schedule. Requires availability on some weekends, holidays, and evenings.

REPORTS TO: General Manager

RESULTS STATEMENT: Ensure that member expectations for Aquatics & Youth Activities are met or exceeded by directly managing operational components.

REPORTING POSITIONS: These positions report directly to you:

All Child Watch & Youth Activities Personnel


Operations - ensure that the Aquatics & Youth Activities activities are well-run and enjoy a high level of member participation, support and satisfaction

· Oversee and be involved in daily operations while providing consistent, efficient, seamless experiences for members, guests and staff

· Provide overall leadership for each staff member in Aquatics & Youth Activities department

· Develop, communicate, and maintain standard operating procedures and training of staff

· Develop staff schedules; keeping budget requirements in mind

· Develop and manage Aquatics & Youth Activities programming for the membership including child watch, camps, programs, and series

· Plan, organize and execute Aquatics & Youth Activities events including holidays, team events and home meets

· Interact professionally with all staff; foster an atmosphere of cooperation and mutual respect

· Provide leadership during emergency situations and operations; ensure staff are trained to respond

· Take full accountability and a leadership role on the pool decks to ensure that all areas meet the highest standards

Member Engagement - ensure that the Aquatics & Youth Activities department provides a high level of customer service and hospitality and establishes a personal connection to members

· Meet and greet members and maintain a high degree of visibility

· Anticipate and be proactive in member needs

· Develop professional relationships with members and their guests

· Seek to engage and solicit input from the membership

· Endeavor to listen and solve problems when necessary to ensure positive member experience

· Be familiar with and able to share with members and staff accurate details regarding programming, events and classes offered through the Aquatics & Youth Activities Department

Communication - ensure that department communication is appropriate, complete, and timely

· Respond to members’ feedback, ensuring satisfactory outcomes and timely responses

· Communicate with supervisor regularly to ensure cohesive management

· Conduct effective staff meetings on a regular basis; share Club updates with staff

· Actively participate in management meetings

· Organize and conduct regular meetings with related staff, departments, and member groups

· Communicate directly with members whenever needed about aquatics operations

· Provide timely information to the management team for the website, newsletters, email blasts, Club updates, etc.

Teamwork - ensure that relationships with all staff are constructive and productive

· Build positive relationships with other Club employees

· Ensure cooperation between Aquatics & Youth Activities department and other Club departments

· Promote a fair, honest and open environment of cooperation within the Aquatics & Youth Activities Department

Professional Development - demonstrate consistent commitment to improving self and all members of Aquatics & Youth Activities team

· Actively participate in Professional Development Seminars

· Maintain thorough working knowledge of aquatics equipment and programing

· Must maintain a current CPR/AED certification and ensure that team members are certified

· Ensure staff are trained and ready to respond in emergency situations; ensure proper documentation is submitted after emergency

· Train Aquatics & Youth Activities staff for interdepartmental cross–utilization; as needed

Management and Supervision - demonstrate management and supervisory judgement

· Responsible for Aquatics & Youth Activities Operations at all times

· Support and enforce Club and department policies for all staff

· Ensure that new staff are successfully on boarded and fully trained

· Ensure all staff are informed on new or updated Club and department policies

· Manage performance and duty assignments of Aquatics & Youth Activities staff

· Develop yearly evaluation and regular feedback to the Aquatics & Youth Activities staff

· Be part of regular on-deck management; develop a Manager on Duty program/schedule

· Able to problem solve with a focus on customer service

· Interview and complete evaluation process for Aquatics & Youth Activities staff

· Coach and counsel Aquatics & Youth Activities staff when necessary

Facility Maintenance & Appearance - ensure Aquatics & Youth Activities facilities are in platinum condition at all times

· Ensure physical safety of staff and members/guests

· Ensure that all facilities are well maintained and consistently in good repair

· Ensure highest standards for cleanliness and sanitation

· Conduct monthly facility reviews

· Appropriately report all equipment and facilities repairs needs in a timely fashion to appropriate department or General Manager

· Facilitate off-season repairs and projects to ensure a well maintained facility

· Ensure the facility is properly secured each night

Financials –

· Meet or exceed budget expectations and track revenue and expenses every month

· Work with General Manager and Board to create annual operating budgets

· Track capital assets and develop yearly capital budgets

· Purchase operating and capital items; completing appropriate paperwork

· Create additional revenue by engaging members in activities


· Provide platinum service to members, guests, and coworkers

· Ensure a clean and safe environment

· Know and enforce club and departmental rules

· Demonstrate the highest level of character and integrity

· Demonstrate a positive attitude with a teamwork philosophy

· Perform other duties as assigned

· Flexibility in seasonal and weekly schedules is mandatory


· High degree of maturity, integrity, goal-orientation, self-motivation, and personal accountability with ability to work independently as well as function as part of a team

· Exceptional written and verbal communication skills

· High level of problem solving ability

· Possess strong customer service and hospitality mentality

· Thorough knowledge of aquatics facilities, equipment, and programming

· Must be able to regularly stand and walk; must regularly lift and/or move objects up to 50 lbs; must stand for lengthy periods of time, use hands and fingers and reach with hands and arms; must be able to climb, balance, stop, kneel, crouch or crawl

· Proficiency in Microsoft Office


High School diploma

Red Cross Lifeguard Certificate required

American Red Cross Basic First Aid required, training on AED units and possession of a current Red Cross CPR card

Red Cross Progressive Swimming Instructor Certificate a plus

2 years minimum management experience

2 plus years aquatics experience including lifeguard training and teaching swim lessons

College degree in related field (Education, Physical Education, Recreation Management, or Health Sciences) a plus

Competitive swimming experience as either a coach or athlete a plus

Certified Pool Operator or Aquatics Facility Operator Certification a plus but not mandatory

Private Club experience a plus
