The Senior Accountant will assist in the coordination and management of the accounting functions and fiscal reporting requirements of Capital Prep Schools. The Senior Account will assist in developing, calculating, maintaining, reviewing and analyzing accounting, payroll, general ledger and financial records/statements with primary emphasis on expenditure of funds that facilitate services that promote successful education programs and services in support and alignment with organizational goals and strategic commitments.
Typical Jobs Duties and Responsibilities:
Maintenance of the General Ledger System and Chart of Accounts in Accordance with GAAP.
Reconcile general ledger accounts and prepare journal entries for the monthly, quarterly and annual accounting close.
Prepare schedules and reconciliations for the annual financial/compliance audits, retirement plan audits and IRS Form 990 reporting.
Ensure the completeness and accuracy of monthly bank reconciliations and monitor monthly cash flow statements.
Management of state and federal grants, disbursements, guidelines and reporting.
Process accounts payable, receivables and other accounts to ensure timely payments and receipt of funds with proper account coding.
Track capital expenditures, and provide appropriate documentation.
Responsible for the preparation of the bi-weekly payrolls.
Work with the Controller to recommend changes to procedures and policies to improve efficiency and accuracy with current best practices.
Process district P-Card transactions, employee reimbursements, payment vouchers, invoices, purchase orders, contracts, and any other financial documents as necessary.
Assist in the performance of accounting and analytical tasks and computations.
Assist with budget preparation, monitoring and forecasts.
Attend Board meeting as may be requested. Make presentations and be available for questions as necessary.
Participate as necessary in the development and implementation of financia.l management systems and software.
May be required to perform additional related duties as assigned.
Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in Accounting, Finance or related field preferred.
3-5’ experience in School or non-profit accounting and budgeting.
Working knowledge of non-profit accounting principles and practices. Knowledge of CT and NY Charter School finances a plus.
Proficiency with computer applications, i.e. Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint and Windows. ADP and Quickbooks experience is preferred .
Experience coordinating Accounting/Finance operations and coordinating multiple projects at once.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of administration.
Ability to work under stressful situations and within specific time constraints.
Excellent time management, organizational skills and communication skills written and verbal.
Ability to work independently and to maintain confidential information.
Ability to work an extended day, if necessary.
