Job Description: JOB SUMMARYThe Department of Public Works (DPW) Waterworks Assistant Manager will work with the DPW Waterworks Manager to operate and safely manage potable water delivery to select artists, theme camps, and infrastructure (Civic Water Program). The role involves interfacing with the community, and will work to ensure good relations and safe conduct while on the work site. This role will assist in scheduling and managing the Waterworks Crew as well as tracking all water distributed across multiple platforms . They will provide point-of-contact information for Civic Water program participants, maintain internal Waterworks DFM and all subsidiary tables and schedules, assist as sanitation and water chemistry liaison, and execute additional dispatch, tracking, and inspection duties as needed. This is a temporary, full-time ineligible for benefits role, located in Gerlach, Nevada.The deadline to apply for this role is 12:00pm Pacific on Tuesday, July 12th, 2022. DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSDaily Operations & Maintenance (50%)Be on time and ready to work for all scheduled shifts.Assist with all aspects of Waterworks logistics. As necessary, attend meetings, create reports, and take notes to keep the DPW Waterworks Manager informed of registration updates, account details, and any concerns. Generate and maintain production schedules, track progress and enter data. Interface with other Burning Man departments, vendors, and theme camps to fulfill these duties; Visit delivery sites as needed to confirm proper tank location, sanitation, and maintenance status. Confirm correct materials and testing procedure for tank inspection, andassist in tank inspection and sanitation.Assist in keeping a basic inventory of all materials. Inventory must be submitted at the end of the event cycle to the DPW Waterworks & Plumbing Operations Manager. Community Relations (20%)Interface as initial point-of-contact for all Civic Water Program participants.Maintain a participant database with updated information.Maintain clear and respectful communication with the DPW Waterworks & Plumbing Teams, BRC Departments, Vendors, Participants, and Artists.Escalate any concerns to the DPW Waterworks Manager. Practice handling data safely, and assist in protecting account holders’ personal and financial information according to PCI Compliance and department standards.Leadership (20%)Provide the Waterworks Crew with support as needed regarding all aspects of the sanitation process. Train DPW volunteers on sanitization and tank inspection processes as needed. Support and train dispatchers and trackers as needed. Be willing/able to fill in for dispatcher or tracker when needed in the event of scheduled breaks, illness, or other periods of absence.General (5%) Work independently and with the Waterworks Crew to efficiently track water usage. Write and submit the final “Ember” report by the end of the event cycle that scrutinizes and critiques the successes of the season and areas in need of improvement with the purpose of improved overall efficiency.Wear your allocated PPE (personal protective equipment) which is specific for the materials you are handling. Let your Manager know if you need replacement PPE.Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%)Work with the Waterworks Crew to plan and execute LNT and Waste disposal plans.Help to establish and oversee the maintenance of a clean and safe worksite; ensure that all team members are provided with the necessary OSHA approved safety equipment.Review and understand the BRC Rain Contingency Plan and help to execute as directed.Schedule, attend, and support crew attendance to Team Meetings and DPW Morning Meetings.Read, understand, and abide by the rules and codes of conduct according to the Burning man Staff policies, protocols and behavioral standards. Help implement Burning Man’s Integrated Plan and work with all BRC departments to ensure water distribution and safety.Monitor personal well-being, be aware of work expectations while also setting realistic boundaries, and proactively address any concerns with managementTactfully manage, reassign and redirect workflow using education, empowerment, and delegation when appropriate or necessary, monitoring team morale and setting manageable work expectations.Prepare a written feedback report to the DPW Utilities Superintendent describing the successes and failures of the season with the purpose of improved overall efficiency and suggestions within the season’s review period.Perform various other duties as assigned by DPW Management. LEARNING AND TEACHINGDocumentation - Drives the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to assigned duties.Teaching – Takes a leadership role in the acculturation and training of staff. Teaches live or e-learning classes, as requested. Promotes a culture of teaching and learning throughout the community.Mentoring - Mentors subordinates in acquiring the knowledge, skills, and experience that will allow them to advance in the organization. Aids, encourages, and inspires their team.Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes. Participates in conferences, forums, and networking events, where appropriate.Speaking – Represents Burning Man as a subject matter expert and culture-bearer, as requested.QUALIFICATIONS RequiredProject management and logistics experience.Experience with management and training of laborers and volunteers.Must have been to Burning Man and be familiar with the event worksite, Black Rock City and its departments.Working knowledge of OSHA compliant personal protection equipment, first aid kits, and fire extinguishers.Able to safely navigate city streets and access roads that are congested with participants, bicycles, and vehicles.Experience managing budgets, purchasing, and receiving.Time Management Skills: Effectively manages own time, the time of individual team members, and the efforts of the team as a whole.Technology: Knowledge in how to use handheld digital devices for content capturing (training provided). Computer Skills: Advanced user of Google products (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive) and Microsoft Word and Excel. A willingness to learn, use, and routinely update online tools and documents. Comfortable with spreadsheets and with proactively asking questions should clarification on how to use an online tool be needed. Ability to learn and work with the technology used to track user accounts and payments, and preseason software used for collecting registrations.Organization: Instills and applies order, and pays careful attention to detail in the handling of important information.Communication Skills: Clearly and concisely communicates verbally and through written correspondence. Tailors communication to receiving party with appropriate professionalism. Experienced and comfortable with using 2 way radios.Service Orientation: Maintains a respectful and polite demeanor, providing services with care, and offering thoughtful acknowledgement and accommodation of requests. Sensitive to others' needs and feelings, understanding and helpful.Integrity: Honest, ethical, reliable, fulfills obligations.Adaptability: Open to change and to considerable variety in daily tasks. Ability to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada.Preferred Occupational background or education in chemistry, water management, or related field.Experience supervising major projects in remote wilderness and/or desert environments. Considerable amount of time spent using laptop or desktop computer. On-playa: This position requires periods of heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing. This position will be physically demanding, and requires individuals with good physical health, and endurance. Work will include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Much of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
