Job Description

Founded in 1995, Brown Emergency Medicine (Brown EM; is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation typically referred to as an academic medical practice plan. Its clinical focus is emergency medicine, and it provides all emergency medicine physicians and advanced practice providers (i.e., physician's assistants and nurse practitioners) who lead and staff the four emergency departments of the Lifespan healthcare system and caring for more than 250,000 patients annually. Brown EM's clinical mission is to provide state-of-the-art care for adult and pediatric emergencies, staffing the state's only Level 1 trauma center, the comprehensive stroke center, and more. Its physicians conduct research in emergency medicine and translational science, train residents in emergency medicine, and teach at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and beyond. Brown EM's 304 employees are comprised of 129 board-certified physicians, 70 advanced practice providers, 61 administrative employees and 44 scribes. It is an affiliate of Brown Physicians, Inc., a multi-specialty medical practice group founded and led by faculty affiliated with The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Brown EM is currently seeking a full-time Financial Analyst who reports to the Manager, Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) and provides recurring and ad-hoc analyses of our operation sand opportunities. The Financial Analyst will be a member of the Finance team who uses their knowledge and skillset to help drive financial planning and decision-making throughout Brown EM. The Financial Analyst will be responsible for assisting with the annual budget and will assist with provider compensation analysis. The Financial Analyst will be based in Providence, RI. The position responsibilities will be customized to the qualifications of the person filling the role.

There are three areas in which the candidate must excel to succeed in the area of Brown EM ;

Ability to apply the proper financial analysis technique to a problem: The Financial Analyst is responsible for selecting the proper techniques to analyze a matter. They work closely with others who have extensive operations knowledge and can dollarize the matter so that decisions can be made on whether to proceed based on value created for the foundation.

  • Understands when to use incremental or full absorption amounts to evaluate a matter
  • Performs financial forecasting, reporting, and operational metrics tracking
  • Has a central role in preparing, compiling, and presenting the annual operating budget
  • Analyzes financial date and creates financial models for decision support
  • Reports on financial performance and prepares managerial financial statements for regular leadership reviews
  • Analyzes past results, performs variance analysis, identifies trends, and makes actionable recommendations
  • Either writes or edits the MD&A that accompanies our monthly financial reporting, assuring that clear explanations of the major drivers of operating results are at hand
  • Works closely with the accounting team to ensure accurate financial reporting particularly in accrual-based estimation and measurement of patient revenue and receivables, including contractual allowances and allowances for doubtful accounts accounted for under ASC606
  • Identify and drive process improvements, including the creation of standard and ad-hoc reports, tools, and Excel dashboards
  • Increase productivity of the Finance department by developing automated reporting/forecasting tools to handle routine requests
  • Is proficient with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite; can use data query and extraction tools like Alteryx, BI360 and PowerBI to produce reports and analyses that bring clarity to decision-making
  • Measures productivity in terms of projects completed and not work done


Key here is the ability to interact productively and professionally with others across our foundation. The Financial Analyst is a member of third-party payer negotiations teams and is expected to support those undertakings with data and analyses that inform the team as to how much value is being created by each negotiating round. The Financial Analyst also provides insight on new business development and revenue enhancement opportunities, typically using discounted cash flow techniques to evaluate the value created by each new opportunity.

We expect to see a growing maturation and an increase in the technical skills of our Financial Analyst, to the point where they can propose analyses that will bring clarity and efficiency to our leadership's decisions.


The ability to clearly communicate financial results and related matters to audiences comprised typically of nonfinancial leaders is the third area critical to the Controller's success. We have learned to use as few words and numbers as are required to clearly describe a matter and its solution, without leaving anything of importance out and nothing extraneous left in.

Qualifications for the position are:

  • Position requires a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or business administration; masters degree preferred
  • Three to five years of prior experience performing financial analysis and/or accounting transactions
  • Proficient Excel skills
  • Experience with general ledger and financial planning and reporting applications
  • Data analytics experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills and high level of autonomy
  • Effective communication with executive leaders in all facets of Accounting and Finance
