Job Description

Brown Emergency Medicine (Brown EM) is the academic emergency medicine physician practice plan of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Brown EM provides emergency department staffing for Rhode Island hospital, the only Level I trauma center in this region; Hasbro Children's Hospital, Rhode Island's only children's specialty hospital; The Miriam Hospital, a leading community teaching hospital and Newport Hospital, a community Magnet Hospital, Brown EM member physicians and providers treat over 250,000 patients per year at our four clinical sites, drawing patients from Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Brown EM is looking for an Accounts Receivable Specialist who is able to conduct independent review/analysis of all areas of Account Receivable. Responsibilities include but are not limited to auditing of all Accounts Receivable related functions and monitoring adherence to established policies.

Primary responsibilities are as follows;

  • Works with insurers to effectively resolve issues for claims over 30 days old to maximize reimbursement
  • Processes electronic billing and billing edits as needed
  • Responsible for posting and processing denied claims as needed
  • Provides follow-up on account receivable files
  • Verify and update insurance information for timely and accurate billing
  • Responsible for writing Appeal letters for third-party insurances
  • Advises supervisor of findings and works with appropriate staff to resolve/correct any issues
  • Works with Coding Department to review proper coding for denied claims
  • Maintains service standards in accordance with the departmental/organizational policies
  • Resolves reimbursement discrepancies by analyzing information and notifying manager when applicable
  • Works with external auditors to retrieve billing data and record information
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and follows all related HIPAA guidelines
  • Enters patient billing information for all insurances and related payments into the practice management system
  • Researches and responds to status of patient eligibility for hospital charges
  • Verifies insurance coverage for all third-party liability illnesses/injuries
  • Performs clerical functions including typing, filing, and maintaining related correspondences
  • Notifies supervisor of any credentialing/re-credentialing issues that may arise
  • Responsible for answering phones for the Billing Department
  • Responds to inquiries and requests from all customers/patients and resolves as authorized
  • Keep abreast of current trends, practices, and developments in the profession, making recommendations for implementation

The qualifications for this job are:

  • Five years related medical accounts receivable patient billing experience
  • Knowledge of CPT-4, ICD-10 Coding, and medical terminology
  • Knowledge of MS Office and Excel
  • Must submit a background release form and demonstrate proof of being free from disqualifying information
  • Excellent verbal communication/service skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment
  • Proficient communication/clerical skills
  • Mentors colleagues within scope of responsibility
  • Valid driver's license and access to an insured vehicle preferred
  • Experience with practice management systems preferred
