RTC Therapist

Position Summary

The Substance Abuse Therapist is primarily responsible for providing individual, group, and family counseling to assigned patients, including both adolescents and adults. On RTC, the Substance Abuse Therapist completes substance abuse assessments on assigned patients and uses the assessment to develop patient-specific goals. The Substance Abuse Therapist will serve as a liaison for linking patients to substance abuse treatment and community resources upon discharge.

Position Specific Responsibilities

  1. Completes substance abuse assessments as assigned

  2. Conducts and documents substance abuse groups as scheduled

  3. Develops patient-specific goals and interventions and documents on treatment plan

  4. Attends treatment team as assigned and provides feedback on patient attendance, participation, and progress towards treatment goals

  5. Participates in the discharge-planning process specific to providing referrals related to ongoing substance abuse treatment and community resources for the patient

  6. Conducts and documents individual and family sessions as assigned

  7. May provide direct patient care supervision

  8. For Residential patients, provides information for monthly progress report.

  1. Demonstration of assessment skills, conducting social histories which conform with standards of practice

  2. Knowledge of treatment planning process and incorporating information from the assessment into goal development

  3. Skills in communicating patient/family needs to treatment team, referral sources, and other agencies.

  4. Knowledge and skills related to a variety of therapeutic theories and techniques.

  5. Skills in Motivational Interviewing

  6. Knowledge of laws related to child/adult abuse and neglect/maltreatment and mandated reporting.

  7. Policy and procedures on multi-disciplinary treatment planning.

  8. Knowledge of program-specific rules, protocols, and handbooks

  9. Knowledge of patient rights

  10. Knowledge of admitting procedure

  11. Knowledge of voluntary/involuntary patient status

  12. Ability to develop an effective working relationship with patient and family (engagement, collaboration, advocacy, problem-solving).

  13. Effective oral and written communication skills.

  14. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
