Job Summary:

The Assistant Shop Manager at Brooks Construction is responsible for assisting the Shop Manager in scheduling equipment repairs and maintenance, purchasing equipment parts, managing equipment yard, assigning mechanics schedules, and carrying out day-to-day administrative activities. The position requires a thorough understanding of equipment shop management, equipment repairs, and maintenance. The individual needs to be flexible, resourceful, and dependable to meet changing demand caused by down equipment and internal customer demands. This position requires open availability, including early start times, weekends, and night work as required based on productions demands. This position reports directly to the Shop Manager. The Assistant Shop Manager position will provide a hands-on learning experience directly related to responsibilities and skills needed in a Shop Manager position.

Essential Job Functions (*=Non-essential tasks):
  • Assisting in managing mechanics and yard employees, which includes scheduling, training, coaching and motivating.
  • Demonstrating and modeling integrity, teamwork, and a dedication to a quality product
  • Making decisions and resolving equipment problems quickly and accurately
  • Communicating with Foreman, Project Managers and crews on a daily basis to determine equipment repairs or maintenance needs
  • Ensuring mechanics complete daily paperwork in a timely fashion including dailies, safety checklists and toolbox talks
  • Entering data and maintain equipment records on automated spreadsheets
  • Ensures all daily maintenance and repairs are complete
  • Works with Shop Manager and Mechanics to identify and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions
  • Understand and comply with federal, state, and location regulations that affect service operations, such as hazardous waste disposal, OSHA Right to Know etc.
  • Understand and ensure compliance with manufacturer warranty and policy procedures
  • Provides technical support for technicians when necessary.
  • Checks progress of each repair order throughout the day.
  • Monitors shop condition, including cleanliness, safety, and the condition of the shop equipment.
  • Continuously learn new technical information and techniques in formal training sessions in order to stay abreast with rapidly changing technology.
  • Assumes duties of Shop Manager in their absence.
  • Participates in new equipment training and implementation
  • Completes necessary equipment recordkeeping on a daily basis

Experience:
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in equipment management or 8 years' in technician experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of operation of various types of heavy mobile equipment
  • Previous experience in managing multiple mechanics
  • Familiar with rules and regulations of associated unions

Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED is required
  • College or technical certification is preferred.

Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job may be considered.

Working Environment:
  • Individual will be working in a shop and field environment
  • Ability to work in adverse conditions, including rain, snow, extreme heat or cold, water, mud, dust, etc.
  • Individual will be working with internal customers (Foremen, Superintendents, Project Managers, QC/QA Asphalt Lab, Safety, HR, Accounting, and other Support Departments)
  • Individual will work at varying production paces dependent on equipment repairs and maintenance demands

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Assist in supervision of multiple mechanics and yard employees at any given time
