THE AGENCY: Bridges Homeward (BH) is one of the oldest human services agencies in Greater Boston. Founded in 1873 as the Avon Home, an orphanage for local children, BH has a long and distinguished history of serving children, adolescents, individuals and families in the Cambridge area, Greater Boston and its suburbs. Today BH provides services for foster and group care, adoption, developmental disabilities, and family support, all programs that support individuals and strengthen families in more than 100 cities and towns throughout Massachusetts.

PURPOSE & SCOPE: The Family Support Specialist is a member of CFCS Family Support and Stabilization team serving Families, children and youth referred by the Department of Children and Families, or other community providers. The Family Support and Stabilization Program's goals are to:

  • Provide a range of interventions aimed at supporting family capacity to safely care for children in order to prevent out-of-home placement of children and youth, or to support return of children and youth to their families;
  • Provide in-home crisis response aimed at stabilizing the family;
  • Mediate and support families in resolving conflicts;
  • Support and educate parents to enhance their capacity to care for their children.

The Family Support Specialist is supervised by the Family Support and Stabilization Supervisor, and provides direct referral, coordination and management of resources and services to families and children.


  • Organizes and manages a caseload of families and children referred by Department of Children and Families or other community providers;
  • Collaborates with parents, children, DCF staff, Lead Agencies, community resources and CFCS staff in developing plans specifying resources and services needed, making referrals, and monitoring service provision;
  • Maintains regular contact with collaborating partners;
  • Provides conflict resolution and mediation for families;
  • Monitors safety of children in the home and during supervised family visitation;
  • Maintains complete, detailed and accurate records;
  • Helps support or present information alone or with other team members at parenting workshops;
  • Provides parenting education and support in-home and in group settings.

Duties and responsibilities are carried out in conformance with relevant Competences (attached).


  • Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, education or a related field;
  • Professional licensure where applicable;
  • Minimum of one-years' experience providing case management and/or counseling services to children, adolescents and families; preference given to those with experience working with pregnant or parenting teens or young adults;
  • Experience in child welfare services preferred;
  • Bi-lingual required. We are seeking candidates that speak English and Spanish

  • Valid driver's license and properly insured vehicle
  • Clearance of background checks as required by state and federal law.
