SPINE SURGICAL TECH COORDINATOR

  • POSITION SUMMARY
  • The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) coordinator works as an integral member of the surgical team providing care for the patient during the peri-operative period. The CST Coordinator will have an acquired knowledge of the types of procedures performed in this department and will be familiar with the correct application of the instruments used plus how to clean and care for the instruments. The CST Coordinator will have knowledge of medications used during the intra-operative period. Through proper planning and guidance using physician work sheets/pick list the CST Coordinator will arrange the instrumentation in such a manner as to achieve maximum efficiency during an operative procedure, anticipating the needs of the surgeon, maintaining the integrity of the sterile field, and participating in all needed counts.
CST Coordinator works under the direction and supervision of the surgeon and in accordance with hospital policy and appropriate laws and regulations. While functioning in the CST Coordinator role provides aid in exposure homeostasis, and other technical functions that will help the surgeon carry out safe operations with optimal results for the patients.

  • Required:
  • + Associates Degree in Surgical Technology
  • Preferred:
  • + Surgical First Assist Training
  • LICENSURE and CERTIFICATION
  • Required:
  • + Certification as a Surgical Technologist
  • BLS
  • Preferred:
  • + Certified Surgical First Assist
  • Surgical Assist
  • EXPERIENCE
  • Required:
  • + Minimum 3 years experience as a Surgical Technologist in the Operating Room
  • One (1) year Spine experience
  • Preferred:
  • + Minimum 5 years experience as a Surgical Technologist in the Operating Room
  • Three (3) years Spine experience
  • KNOWLEDGE OF, SKILLS IN, ABILITY TO, COMPLEXITY AND DIFFICULY:
  • KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • + Surgical Technician
  • Mechanics of spine surgery
  • Leading in the educational opportunities for staff in regards to spine surgery and maintaining all competencies needed to be an expert
  • Assisting surgeons in spine surgical procedures
  • SKILLS IN:
  • + Excellent problem solving, analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills required.
  • The ability to multi-task and work autonomously to meet deadlines is essential.
  • Use of Microsoft Office, specifically excel and outlook

  • Works with Lawson and acts as departmental resource for Lawson & Surgical System.
  • Works with Epic to post all outstanding surgical logs.
  • Responsible for reconciling purchase order, receiving and invoice discrepancies in a timely manner.
  • Confers with vendors to obtain product or service information, such as price, availability, and delivery schedule.
  • Reviews and processes orders in the procurement of non-stock requisitions to ensure accuracy, timeliness and user satisfaction.
  • Maintains filing system for all requisitions and purchase orders.
  • Builds effective working relationships.
  • Models accountability for learning by sharing knowledge and learning from others.
  • Initiates collaboration with others outside of service area.

  • 20% Time Spent- OVERSIGHT FOR ALL SPINE PROCEDURES:
  • Trouble-shooting technical problems that are potentially unsafe to the patient.
  • Plans for proper cleaning, disinfection and sterilization of reusable instruments, accessories.
  • 15% Time Spent- PROVIDES EDUCATION AND TRAINING FOR SPINE SURGERY SET UP
  • Correct set up for a variety of spine cases performed
  • Proper setup, draping, and positioning of patients for surgical procedures
  • Proper technique for assisting and maintaining a sterile field
  • Proper technique for inspecting instruments for functionality and defects
  • 25% Time Spent- PROVIDES OVERSIGHT FOR SPINE SURGICAL TECH ROLE
  • Supports development of surgical technicians through education and training on the role of the surgical technician in Spine surgery
  • Develop competencies related to the surgical tech role in spine surgery.
  • Monitors performance of the CST in spine surgery
  • Works in collaboration with OR Leadership to provide feedback and evaluation of surgical techs working in Spine surgeries
  • 15% Time Spent- PROGRAM OVERSIGHT
  • Functions as expert who provides for the clinical needs of Spine cases, both directly and indirectly
  • Acts as a consultant for the role from the CST perspective
  • Works collaboratively with physician specialty consults, concurrent and retrospectively
  • Supervises data collection and monitoring of compliance
  • Participates in the development and monitoring of clinical indicators and reports findings to the appropriate health care team
  • 5% Time Spent- FORMULATES AND COMMUNICATES UROLOGICAL PROGRAM GOALS AND POLICIES
  • Works in collaboration with the RN Spine TL, Physician Leads, and OR Leadership to develop annual goals of the program
  • Communicates Spine program goals and policies to surgical staff
  • Develops the criteria for evaluation of the clinical practice of Spine surgery
  • Coordinates CST educational activities necessary to meet the objectives of Spine surgery
  • 10% Time Spent- PARTICIPATES IN QUALITY IMPROVEMENT OF SPINE SURGERY
  • Works in collaboration with the RN Spine TL, Physician Leads, and OR Leadership to monitor outcomes and performance of Spine surgery cases.
  • In collaboration with the Spine team, creates performance. improvement indicators and develops the appropriate strategies for improvement.
  • In collaboration, monitors progress of the clinical quality of the Spine surgical cases.
  • Participates in the development and monitoring of Spine clinical indicators and reports findings to the appropriate health care team.
