CLINIC NURSE PRACTITIONER

+ POSITION DESCRIPTION
+ POSITION SUMMARY
+ The nurse practitioner (NP) in this position must demonstrate the applicable knowledge,critical thinking and procedural skills to plan, coordinate and provide care on a continual basis in a variety of settings. The NP will provide direct patient care by examining, diagnosing and analyzing the patient's current health condition. The NP will be responsible for developing short- and long-term goals and treatment plans in collaboration with a physician and/or established protocols/standards. The NP will maintain familiarity with the patient throughout the inpatient / outpatient treatment plan and tailor care and education to meet the needs of each patient based on clinical guidelines.
Be one of two Advanced Practice Clinicians joining a team of four general surgeons. Assist the physicians in the global management of patients of all ages in the pre-op, intra-operatively and post-operative care settings and outpatient clinic in accordance with standards and guidelines. The primary resposnibility of the NP will be provide inpatient care that will include, daily rounding, writing orders, post-op orders, instructions and education, admission and discharge summaries, assisting in the OR and performing minor procedures. Providing care in the surgical outpatient clinic is also a possibility. The right candidate will be able to interface and effectively communicate with an interdisciplinary team. There is an expectation of rotating first call coverage for inpatient care.
+ REQUIREMENTS
+ EDUCATION
+ Required:
+ Master of Nursing or Doctorate of Nursing Practice
Graduate of an accredited nurse practitioner program
+ Preferred:
+ LICENSURE and CERTIFICATION
+ Required:
+ Active Montana state RN and APRN licenses
Montana APRN prescriptive authority and DEA licensure
Current national board certification as NP in relevent speciality
BLS through AHA as healthcare provider
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within 6 months of hire
+ Preferred:
+ Trauma Nurse Core Course Certifications (TNCC)
+ EXPERIENCE
+ Required:
+ 3-5 years previous experience in general surgery (inpatient / outpatient / operating room as an APC)
+ Preferred:
+ Experience as surgical first or second assist
Experience as an APC/RN in acute care and trauma settings
Previous experience in EHR documentation
Proficiency in documenting and billing in preoperative setting
+ KNOWLEDGE OF, SKILLS IN, ABILITY TO, COMPLEXITY AND DIFFICULY:
+ KNOWLEDGE OF:
+ Current with continuing education, including pharmacology, related to MT licensure requirements
Personal computers, hardware and basic software programs including EMR, e-mail, word processing, and spreadsheets
ICD codes and CPT coding -related to office visits and procedures
Up to date knowledge of internal medicine / general surgery principles and practices and management guidelines
Understanding of primary and specialty services offered through Bozeman Health and regionally and when and how to refer / consult other medical providers
Knowledge of diagnostic testing modalities: indications, interpretation and application of labs and imaging
Up to date knowledge of primary care / internal medicine and perioperative medications: interactions, contraindications, dosing, side effects, administration
Up to date knowledge of community resources
Knowledge of clinical operations and procedures
Knowledge of procedures and methods of laboratory testing and interpretation.

+ Ability to communicate effectively both orally and written- with colleagues, patients and families
Preparation and maintenance of electronic medical record
Ability to maintain flexibility to adapt to a variety of work environments and workload assignments
Ability to manage stressful situations and to practice self-care
Ability to educate and counsel patients and families
Ability to provide age appropriate care in a culturally and ethnically sensitive manner
Ability to work independently and in a team model of patient care
Ability to delegate duties to care team members- to include RN's, MA's, and unlicensed personnel
Ability to follow established Bozeman Health policy and procedures
Ability to evaluate one's own nursing and advanced practice nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards, guidelines, rules and regulations
Ability to attain knowledge and competency as needed for job description. Participates in ongoing educational activities, demonstrating commitment to lifelong learning, seeks experience to maintain skills and competency. Maintains record of educational activities.
Participates in required APC peer and performance review and takes action to achieve goals that are identified during this process
Ability / interest /and participation in efforts that contribute to the professional development of peers and students
Ability to integrate ethical provisions in all areas of practice: delivering care that protects patient autonomy, dignity and right. Maintaining patient confidentiality, serving as a patient advocate.
Ability to maintain therapeutic and professional relationships with patients and peers
Ability and commitment to integrate evidence based research into ones professional practice
Ability to provide leadership in the practice setting and APC profession

Ability to provide accountable advanced nursing and medical care to patients, within the Montana scope of practice as an nurse practitioner

+ NP will work to full scope of practice with MD collaboration as per Bozeman Health bylaws
Patient care situations will range from basic to complex
NP must have good self judgement and ability to know their competencies and skill limitations within their scope of practice, and when to refer and consult appropriate medical providers
+ ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
+ 40% Time Spent
Provides quality, efficient and effective patient care in accordance with standards/guidelines, applicable statutory requirements and accepted clinical practice for the nurse practitioner profession.
Is engaged in consulting and advising treatment plans for patients and following established protocols.
+ 10% Time Spent -
Work includes providing direct patient care by examining, diagnosing and analyzing the patient's current health condition.
Responsible for developing short- and long-term goals and treatment plans in collaboration with a physician and/or established protocols/standards.
+ 10% Time Spent-
Maintains familiarity with the patient throughout the inpatient/outpatient treatment plan and tailors care and education to meet the needs of each patient based on clinical guidelines.
Is financially responsible for all aspects relating to transcription/coding.
+ 40% Time Spent
Performs extensive and detailed perioperative history and physical exams
Orders and interprets appropriate perioperative laboratory, imaging, and other diagnostic procedures
Interprets and integrates data to determine accurate diagnoses and therapeutic plans
Administers and prescribes perioperatve medications in compliance with state law and practice guidelines
Acts as a first or second assist during surgical procedures
Communicates effectively and coordinates patient care with collaborating physician and the care team
Documents patient examination, assessment, plan of care, response to interventions and follow up in the electronic medical record.
