Job Description

Job Title: Stables Director

Location: Schoepe Scout Reservation at Lost Valley, California

Job Summary: As the Stables Director, you will oversee the equine program at Lost Valley, managing the care and maintenance of our horses and ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all participants in our equestrian activities.

Season Dates:

  • Director Week: 6/9/24 - 6/15/24
  • Training Week: 6/16/24 - 6/22/24
  • Week 1: 6/23/24 - 6/29/24
  • Week 2: 6/30/24 - 7/6/24
  • Week 3: 7/7/24 - 7/13/24
  • Week 4: 7/14/24 - 7/20/24
  • Week 5: 7/21/24 - 7/27/24

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the daily operations of the stables, including feeding, grooming, and healthcare for a herd of horses.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive horseback riding program suitable for all levels of campers.
  • Train and supervise stable staff and volunteers, ensuring that they follow all safety protocols and procedures.
  • Lead educational sessions on horsemanship for scouts, including but not limited to riding, horse care, and stable management as outlined in the Horsemanship Merit Badge Booklet.
  • Coordinate with the Camp Director and other camp staff to integrate equestrian activities with other camp programs.
  • Maintain all equestrian equipment and facilities, ensuring they are safe and in good working order.
  • Inform Camp administration promptly of all program materials and supply needs.
  • Monitor the health and well-being of the horses, arranging for veterinary care as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and standards for equestrian programs.
  • Support overall operations of Schoepe Scout Reservation at Lost Valley and the Orange County Boy Scouts of America.
  • Submit an end of summer report

Qualifications:

  • Ability to live on site during the summer season working flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as program scheduling requires.
  • Extensive experience managing equestrian facilities and programs.
  • Strong understanding of horse behavior and needs.
  • Experience in teaching or leading horseback riding and care classes.
  • Certification in equine management, horsemanship, or a related field is preferred.
  • First Aid and CPR certification, or willingness to obtain.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.

Work Environment:

  • This is a full-time, seasonal position during the camp's operating season.
  • The role requires a flexible schedule, including weekends and evenings.
  • Work is performed outdoors in various weather conditions.
