POSITION TITLE: Registered Nurse Med/Surg
SUPERVISED BY: Nursing Manager of Med/Surg/Emergency Department
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Med/Surg Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for supervising, delivering and evaluating patient care delivered by all components of the shift (i.e. LPN and CNA care delivered in a safe and timely manner based on the policies and procedures of the facility). The RN may also be responsible for the administrative activities of the shift as designated by the supervisor.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
Current Idaho professional RN license.
Six (6) months medical/surgical patient care experience.
IV Certified by the State of Idaho preferred.
Current CPR/BLS certification required
ACLS certification required within 4 months of hire.
Must key board at 30 wpm; be proficient on computers i.e. Outlook and Electronic medical records systems.
SCHEDULE:
Per Diem
12 hr Days or Nights/Schedule varies with the needs of the department

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/REQUIREMENTS:
- Assigns staff appropriately for patient care during shift, according to acuity tool.
- Receives and communicates pertinent shift reports to on-coming shift and what transpired in patient care and conditions.
- Prioritizes presenting problems to be handled during shift.
- Addresses shift personnel in a professional and positive manner regarding problem solving.
- Uses all available resources of information and assessment skills for patient evaluation.
- Addresses, with supporting documentation, any questions, changes and concerns regarding a patient's condition to the physician.
- Performs procedures and treatments ordered for patients within the nurse practice act.
- Administers ordered medications and is alert to difficulties, complications or side effects. Reports the findings appropriately. Documents medication given, or if refuses, why and responses to medications (PRN) given.
- Demonstrates knowledge and use of equipment, including, but not limited to, enteral feeding pumps, SVN, Pulse oximeter, glucose monitor systems, nurse call and alarm systems, suctions systems, oxygen set-ups, cardiac monitors/telemetry, infusion pumps, patient controlled infusion pumps, IKG and lab draws.
- Completion of comprehensive charting and administrative aspects of shift, including but not limited to, clinical records, care plans, admission assessments, discharge planning and medication records.
- Makes frequent checks (at least every one-half hour) on patients and LPN's and CNA's.
- Demonstrates role as patient advocate regarding patient rights. The RN acts in this capacity among staff and family, as well as physicians and administration. Refers financial concerns to Social Services or facilities Patient Advocate.
- Maintains good rapport with families of patients, acting as liaison between families and the physician, as well as families and administration.
- Facilitates communication with health care team to maintain current plan of care for the patient.
- Monitors CNA Flow Sheets for accuracy.
- Completes death care for patients and notification of organ procurement agency.
- Preceptor's new employees.
- Adheres to the guidelines set forth in the facilities Personnel and Policy and Procedure Manuals.
- Communicates to Manager of Acute Care and Emergency Department any complaints, problems, occurrences, deterioration of patient status or personnel problems immediately.
- Admits new patients to include the admission assessment, obtaining physician orders, database and admitting notes, initiating patient care plan and coordinating with Social Services for admission packet signatures.
- Monitors the physical environment of the Acute Care Facility and notifies appropriate departments when necessary
- Receives and places confidential information with courtesy, accuracy and respect at all times.
- Maintains required education credits as per facility policy.
- Performs infection control maintenance.
- Takes and records vital signs.
- Must be willing to assist in other areas as needed.
- Ability to respond properly and follow Facilities Plan in an emergency situation and/or disaster.
- Completes annual review and keeps current CPR certification and PPD.
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/REQUIREMENTS:
- Performs performance improvement monitoring.
- Assists with scheduling as directed by the Manager of Acute Care and Emergency Department.
- Coordinates the stocking of supplies and linens.
- Performs essential cleaning of patient care equipment.
- All other duties as assigned.
